“I know they were playing against ten men but I’ve also heard some of the goals were very easy. If something strange has happened, we can still prove it.” – Ajax coach Frank de Boer.
Group D of the Champions League witnessed an incredible turnaround on Wednesday night and in the aftermath questions have been asked whether all was 100% kosher.
Lyon’s incredible 7-1 win in Dinamo Zagreb and Ajax’s 3-0 home defeat to Real Madrid meant the French team secured a spot in the knockout stages by virtue of a +2 better goal difference.
The Ligue 1 side were all but written off going into the final matchday and had only scored two goals in the previous five matches in the group. And it took a crazy swing for Ajax to be shunted out of the second automatic qualifying spot.
Specifically, suspicions that Zagreb simply rolled over for Lyon were raised from the fifth goal scored by Lisandro Lopez.
Incredibly, as can be seen in the picture above and on the video below, Dinamo Zagreb defender Domagoj Vida winks at Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis and also gives him the thumbs up just after he picks the ball out of the net.
At first, this seems like a conspiracy theory, but the evidence is pretty damning.
