Crossing the Tyne: The Honey Monster swaps Newcastle for Sunderland

The Honey Monster, the oversize furry monster who eats nothing but Sugar Puffs, has done the dastardly and changed his allegiance as a one-time Newcastle player to now choosing to wear the colours of the sworn-enemy Sunderland.

Back in the 90s, when Kevin Keegan was ruling the roost at St. James’ Park, a legendary ad hit the TV in which the Honey Monster was brought off the bench by King Kev in the FA Cup final to score the winner for the Magpies with a diving header. (Watch here.)

But showing himself to be a fair-weather, the Honey Monster has now turned his back on his former employers, being seen wearing the Black Cats home kit when training in the gym. In a week where the hapless Toon lost Joe Kinnear to illness, the defection of the Honey Monster has added further spit in the eye of all Newcastle supporters.

The truth is though that the Honey Monster has always been a happy to jump ship to the latest fashionable club. Who can forget his unbelievable Rene Higuita “Scorpion Kick” in the Champions League final for Manchester United after coming off the bench to replace the injured Peter Schmeichel. (Watch here.)
