“[Seeing him drink a Pepsi] was the last straw for the company but I don’t think it was the only reason… He didn’t perform up to expectations and his name was associated more with negative than positive news.” – ESPM marketing manager Marcelo Pontes.
Coca-Cola, the goliath fizzy-drinks manufacturer, have axed Ronaldinho from their sponsership payroll after the buck-toothed wonder was spotted drinking a Pepsi at a press conference.
Ronaldinho’s deal with Coke was worth $750,000 a year.
According to reports, Ronaldinho provoked Coke into action after he turned up at an Atletico Mineiro presser and sipping from a can of their arch-rivals. That sparked an immediate response from the bigwigs at Coke, and within a blink of an eye Ronaldinho’s huge endorsement deal was terminated.
It should be pointed out that Ronaldinho’s employers, Atletico Mineiro, have a drinks deal with Pepsi, and we can only assume that Pepsi will look to snap up Dinho to a cut-price contract.
While many have leapt upon Coke’s decision to label Ronaldinho as a falling star, the Brazilian legend still commands the love from huge throngs of adoring fans worldwide.
Proving that point, a brand new video has been released showing that Ronaldinho still has it!: his problem though is that his teammates are often simply not on his level and wavelength.
