With the FA currently investigating the possibility of introducing the Rooney Rule – named after former NFL coach Dan Rooney who spearheaded the rule – English managers are being asked their opinions on it.
The Rooney Rule requires that at least one black candidate and/or minority candidate be interviewed for the a vacant manager’s position, in order to mitigate against the low numbers of black managers in English football.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho had some strong comments on the situaion when asked today; he was forthright and unequivocal:
‘There is no racism in football.
Football wouldn’t be so stupid as to close the door on top people: if you are good you are good; if you are top, you are top.’
