Champions League round-up; Zenit see off Terek Grozny

FC Twente 0 – Arsenal 2 (Champions League qualifier, August 13, 2008) Second-half goals from William Gallas and Emmanuel Adebayor put the Gunners in full control of the tie against Steve McClaren’s side.

Barcelona 4 – Wisla Krakow 0 (Champions League qualifier, August 13, 2008) Barcelona took a two-goal lead into the break at the Nou Camp against Wisla Krakow. Samuel Eto’o slid home the first and Xavi scored the second after fine play from Henry. (Both first-half goals here.) Thierry Henry chipped home the third five minutes into the second period. Samuel Eto’o scored his second with five minutes temaining.

Juventus 4 – Petrzalka 0 (Champions League qualifier, August 13, 2008) On their return to the Champions League Juve took a seventh minute lead at home to Petrzalka with a goal from Mauro Camoranesi. Alessandro Del Piero scored the second midway through the first period – a brilliant finish into the top right hand corner. Giorgio Chiellini added the third to cap a fine half for Claudio Ranieri’s side (highlights here.) Legrottaglie added the fourth in the 90th minute of the match.

Schalke 1 – Atletico Madrid 0 (Champions League qualifier, August 13, 2008) Christian Pander put Schalke one-up on the half hour with a fabulous free-kick at home to Atletico Madrid.

Spartak Moscow 1 – Dinamo Kiev 4 (Champions League qualifier, August 13, 2008) In the battle between former USSR comrades, Spartak took the lead when Nikita Bazhenov collected a poorly attempted interception, cut inside, and curled a right footed shot into the far corner. But the Russians soon conspired to make their own defensive blunder, keeper Stipe Pletikosa came rushing out of his goal, Ismael Bangoura beat him to the ball, and the ball slowly made its way into the net. And it got better for the Ukrainians on the stroke of half-time, Bangoura’s shot was spilled and Artem Milevsky was on hand to score at the far post. A minute after the restart Kiev pulled further ahead, Bangoura once against exposed the gaps in the Spartak defence, bursting through and slotting home. Artem Milevsky grabbed the fourth with five minutes to go.

Shakhtar Donetsk 2 – Dinamo Zagreb 0 (Champions League qualifier, August 13, 2008) Srna (fine free-kick) and Brandao with the goals.

Levski Sofia 0 – BATE Borisov 1 (Champions League qualifier, August 13, 2008)

Brann Bergen 0 – Marseille 1 (Champions League qualifier, August 13, 2008) Benoit Cheyrou with the only goal in the 40th minute after brilliant play from Hatem Ben Arfa.

Galatasaray 2 – Steaua Bucheresti 2 (Champions League qualifier, August 13, 2008) Moreno put the Romanians in front in the fourth minute, nine minutes later Nicolita doubled the lead. Six minutes later Shabani Nonda pulled one back and Nonda equalised early in the second half.

Partizan Belgrade 2 – Fenerebahce 2 (Champions League qualifier, August 13, 2008) Paunovic and Bogunovic put Partizan two-up within the first fourteen minutes. Goals from Alex (pen) and Dani Guiza early in the second half produced a good result for Luis Aragones’ team.
