Open the English papers on Monday and you’ll find a raft of articles proclaiming that Arsenal fans booed Robin van Persie at Cologne on Sunday.
According to the Sun, for example, Arsenal supporters “turned on Robin van Persie” as “the Dutchman came on for the last 20 minutes and was booed by a large section of the 1,500 Arsenal fans who had travelled to Germany.”
Of course, Arsenal fans turning on their own isn’t exactly a new trend.
Back in January 2012, the Emirates incredibly chastised manager Arsene Wenger. Unforgettably, a large swath of the Gunners home crowd booed the Professor after he subbed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Andrey Arshavin moments after the Gunners had levelled against Manchester United.
So if they booed Wenger, they booed Van Persie… right? Well, eye-witness footage told a different story.
Amateur footage taken by YouTuber RozpedAFC captured the moment Van Persie came off the bench in Cologne. Whilst there were some negative sounding noises in the background, far more prominent was a chorus of chants supporting the Dutchman as he entered the action.

Fast forwarding to the end of the match, RozpedAFC recorded a second video showing fans showering Robin van Persie in further song. At the full-time whistle, RVP threw his shirt and captain’s armband into the supporters section, and the striker was again given a far from hostile reception.
