Benfica come out on top in seven goal thriller at Pacos; Weekend round-up

Pacos Ferreira 3 – Benfica 4 (Superliga, September 22, 2008) Nuno Gomes tapped home a cross after seven minutes to give Benfica the lead. Pacos were soon level, Ozeia scoring a beauty in the top corner after Benfica failed to clear the ball out of defence. Maxis Pereira put Benfica in front again with a close-range shot, and Oscar Cardozo made it 1-3 with a penalty just before halftime. Poor handling from Benfica keeper Quim allowed Rui Miguel to reduce the deficit after 63 minutes. Benfica restored their two-goal cushion when Jorge Ribeiro scored with a stunning 25-yard shot on 76 minutes. William pulled one back for Pacos four minutes from time.

Vitoria Guimaraes 0 – Nacional 2 (Superliga, September 22, 2008) Nacional continued their impressive start to the new season, Nene scoring in the first half and Alonso doubling the lead from the spot after the break. Vitoria lost their composure in the final stages, Sereno and Gregory both red carded.

Jagiellonia Bialystok 0 – Wisla Krakow 2 (Ekstraklasa, September 21, 2008) Wisla moved ahead with a stunning strike from Cantoro who rocketed home a volley from the edge of the box in the 25 minute. Boguski bagged a second in the final stages, scoring a breakaway goal to wrap up the win.
