For 75 minutes it was one of the ugliest games you will ever see. Real Madrid continued their policy of playing hard, as they did in the previous two Clasicos, in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.
But, whilst Jose Mourinho and his Real Madrid side have been pilloried in the aftermath of Barcelona’s 2-0 victory it is important to point out that Barcelona have their fair share of cheats as well.
Namely Pedro and Sergio Busquets.
One of the flash points of the first half saw Pedro run into Alvaro Arbeloa and the whole Barcelona team react in anger seemingly suggesting that the Real Madrid defender should be booked.
With Sergio Busquets, undoubtedly a class act and one of the best defensive midfielders in world football, we have been here before. In the Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter Milan last season he produced an Oscar winning performance to ensure Thiago Motta received a red card.
The incident with Busquets also came in the first half last night, when he clutched his face after Marcelo had tapped his shirt.
With so many cameras trained on the pitch these days, do modern footballers really believe they can get away with such blatant play acting?
Footage of Pedro & Sergio Busquets cheating v Real Madrid is on this video. (The clip of Javier Mascherano feigning injury at the beginning is from the Copa del Rey final last week.)
