Barca hit Gijon for six for claim first of the season; Real ease past Racing

Jorge put through his own net five minutes into the second half before Gijon pulled one back 60 seconds later through Francisco Maldonado. Gijon then saw Gerard sent off before Andres Iniesta, and Lionel Messi twice (second goal here) in the last five minutes, completed the rout for Barca and secure their first win of the season.

Racing Santander 0 – Real Madrid 2 (La Liga, September 21, 2008) After a cagey first-half, Ruben de la Red put Real in front on 54 minutes after a blistering run down the right from Higuain. Ruud van Nistelrooy doubled the lead by beating the keeper at the near post.

Athletic Bilbao 2 – Valladolid 0 (La Liga, September 21, 2008) Fernando Llorente and Andoni Iraola (penalty) netted in the second half for Bilbao.

Almeria 1 – Malaga 0 (La Liga, September 21, 2008) Alvaro Negredo struck the decisive goal on 75 minutes before Malaga’s Miguel Angel was dismissed five minutes later, with Almeria’s Jose Ortiz seeing red two minutes later.

Real Betis 0 – Sevilla 0 (La Liga, September 21, 2008)

Valencia 1 – Osasuna 0 (La Liga, September 21, 2008) Cesar Azpilicueta was sent off for the visitors on 63 minutes before Juan Mata grabbed the only goal seven minutes from time.
