AZ spank Sparta for six; Goals from Ireland, Poland & Romania

AZ Alkmaar 6 – Sparta Rotterdam 0 (Eredivisie, October 3, 2008) Mounir El Hamdaoui got AZ off to the perfect start, before three goals in seven minutes effectively killed the match. Moussa Dembele bagged a brace and Gill Swerts netted the other. There was still time for El Hamdaoui and Dembele to add the fifth and sixth goals before the end in a game Sparta will want to instantly forget.

Galway 3 – Cork City 2 (Eircom Premier, October 3, 2008) Jay O’Shea got Galway off to a good start on seven minutes when he linked up with Jonathan Keane. Cork levelled on 20 minutes through Timmy Kiely but Galway hit back via Ciaran Foley on 46 minutes. And when Devine fouled Jesper Jorgensen inside the area on 64 minutes, O’Shea sealed it from the spot. Cork gained some late hope through an 86th-minute Lawrie Dudfield strike, but it was too little too late.

Jagiellonia 2 – Slask 2 (Ekstraklasa, October 3, 2008) Jagiellonia took a sixth minute lead through Zawistowski only to be forced back onto level footing when Mila slotted home a penalty three minutes later. Pesir restored the home advantage just before the end of the first half (highlights here) but three minutes from time Szewczuk popped up to earn a share of the spoils.

Gaz Metan Medias 2 – Gloria Buzau 0 (Liga I, October 3, 2008) First half goals from Prodan and Curtean (fine left foot shot) sealed the win.

Arges 1 – Universitatea Craiova 1 (Liga I, October 3, 2008) Tames put the hosts ahead with a penalty, but Costea equalised after 66 minutes. The game turned nasty in the final minutes as Craiova lost Bornescu and Baird, while Arges lost Balasa, for straight red cards.
