Atletico sporting director outlines role next season for loan stars Alderweireld and Torres

Atletico Madrid sporting director Jose Luis Caminero has praised loan stars Toby Alderweireld and Oliver Torres, outlining a role for the pair next season.

Alderweireld was sent on loan after struggling in his debut season at the Calderon. Since then he has been a key part of a Southampton defence which is the best in the Premier League.

His performances have been so impressive that he is regularly linked with clubs like Manchester City. Southampton were also hoping to sign him on a permanent basis.

Academy product Torres has excelled at Porto, helping the side maintain a title challenge while also progressing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Speaking to Atletico’s official website, Caminero said: “Indeed, our coaches follow a detailed monitoring of all the players that are loaned to other teams. We are very pleased with their performance and growth in general. Óliver and Alderweireld, for example, are finishing a very good season with Porto and Southampton and we are counting on them for the next campaign.

“Borja Bastón is having a great year with Zaragoza, scoring many goals. Leo Baptistão and Insua in Rayo are also enjoying the minutes they need, like Thomas in Almeria, who needed to play games in the first division to continue growing. The same thing is happening with Velázquez in Getafe, who is consolidating in the centre of the defence in his first year in Europe.

“Bounou, Cristian Rodríguez and Rubén Pérez have had more problems in their loans, but are also playing frequently. In any case, all the players loaned until the 30th of June will return to our discipline at the end of the season and we will decide what is best for all.”

Further changes are expected at Atletico this summer. Mario Mandzukic will probably leave the club after falling out with boss Diego Simeone. It will be another struggle for Atletico to hold onto all of their stars. Koke, Arda Turan and Antoine Griezmann are admired by a host of top clubs as are defensive duo Diego Godin and Miranda.

The club can be thankful that they won’t have to panic about Simeone leaving after this season, the coach signing a five year extension last week.
