Aston Villa may be languishing at the bottom of the table, but you feel this is a pivotal game for Tottenham at Villa Park on Sunday.
Since beating Swansea two weeks ago, Spurs have gone on a little wobble, losing at West Ham, drawing at home to Arsenal where they were 2-1 up and playing against 10 men, and on Thursday an under-strength side were well beaten at Borussia Dortmund.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino appeared to sacrifice the Europa League on Thursday night for a Premier League title tilt, when he left Mousa Dembele, Harry Kane and Erik Lamela on the Spurs bench in Germany.
Without the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose, Dele Alli and Eric Dier, Spurs were always going to struggle against an excellent Dortmund side that played some superb football on the night.
Aston Villa look pretty much done and dusted as far as Premier League survival is concerned but Leicester’s survival run only started at around this time last season, so they do have that hope to cling onto.
Since January, Villa have bagged two Premier League home wins, against Crystal Palace and Norwich. But, Remi Garde’s side have lost their last four and many fans, and more importantly players, appear to have given up.
To compound matters, Villa have a few injury problems. Jack Grealish, Libor Kozak and Carlos Sanchez are all doubtful. Adama Traore isn’t fit enough.
Spurs will be at full strength, minus Vertonghen who is back after the international break. Kevin Wimmer has deputised well in the Belgian’s absence.
Tottenham simply have to win this!
