Usually a ‘Last Minute Larry’, Arsene Wenger has gone out and done his shopping early this year, bringing in Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers by the beginning of August, with a whole month to spare.
And he may not be finished just yet.
Speaking at his press conference ahead of tomorrow’s league opener against Crystal Palace, Wenger hinted at another big signing before close of business at midnight on August 31.
Asked about the possibility of more signings Wenger elusively replied, ‘I won’t rule it out…’
He then gave his definition of a ‘big signing’, which differes slightly to that of the press:
‘For me a big signing is a good player; for you it is all about how much money you spend.
Sometimes you have to both, but sometimes you can find a big player without having what you call ‘a big signing’.
Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Lauren, Ljunberg, Pires: the backbone of the Invincibles side were all proof of that Wenger philosophy, but he doesn’t seem to pull off those coups with as much regularity these days…
