Tipped by many as the “new Cesc Fabregas,” all eyes were on Gedion Zelalem when he came on in the second half of Arsenal’s first pre-season friendly against the Indonesian Dream Team on Sunday.
Zelalem, a German youth international who grew up in the US, turned 16 in January and made his Under-21 debut in April.
Calm and composed, Zelalem played it simple in the middle of the Arsenal midfield, winning the ball back with timely interceptions and passing with aplomb, admittedly against weak opposition.
The highlight for the Arsenal number 35 was a glorious outside-of-the-boot through ball that Thomas Eisfeld blazed over.
It bisected three Indonesia Dream Team defenders and had the Arsenal fans watching purring in appreciation.
GIF of the through ball is above with video below. The second clip is Gedion Zelalem’s individual highlights.
