Arsenal produce a fabulous comeback against Stuttgart; Darren Bent is on fire for Spurs

Stuttgart 1 – Arsenal 3 (Friendly, July 30, 2008) After a goalless first half (highlights here), Stuttgart carved Arsenal open straight through the middle as Turkish legend Basturk turned and struck low and hard for the opener. Arsenal weren’t behind for long, Bendtner worked his way in from the right hand side, played a lovely pass forward to Carlos Vela, and the young Mexican controlled the ball on his thigh before firing high in the net. Moments later it was Vela who was the provider, with Bendtner staying strong to take the ball in the box and fire past Jens Lehmann. The Gunners turnaround was completed with a fine third created by Gael Clichy, who bustled down the left hand side before crossing to Jack Wilshere who controlled and hit a low hard shot inside the near post.

Fiorentina 1 – Barcelona 3 (Friendly, July 30, 2008) Carlos Puyol poked home the first just before the half-hour and Jeffren Suarez added the second two minutes after the break. Pazzini pulled one back for the Viola but Bojan Krkic bagged the third minutes later.

Leyton Orient 1 – Tottenham 5 (Friendly, July 30, 2008) Orient went ahead after Jason Demetriou picked up the ball 30 yards from goal and curled a fine shot into the top corner. Within a minute of the restart Bent levelled, stabbing home after the Orient keeper parried Dos Santos’ corner. Just two minutes later and Spurs were in front, Zokora crossed for Aaron Lennon to head home. Luka Modric then grabbed his first goal for Spurs, before Bent stole the plaudits with his two late goals, with his hat-trick goal crashing in off the underside of the bar following more good work from Dos Santos.

Nottingham Forest 0 – Sunderland 1 (Friendly, July 30, 2008) The only goal at the City Ground was scored by Kieran Richardson, who netted a sweet strike from the edge of the box after good work from Anthony Stokes.

Northampton 0 – West Brom 1 (Friendly, July 29, 2008) Kim Do-Heon’s free-kick in the 36th minute gave the Baggies their first win in the pre-season.

AEK Athens 1 – Bursaspor 0 (Friendly, July 30, 2008) Rivaldo scored the only goal from the spot after a questionable penalty decision.

Gamba Osaka 0 – Arsenal Sarandi 1 (Friendly, July 30, 2008) Carlos Castiglione scored the winner with a header in the 87th minute.

Fenerbahce 2 – MTK Budapest 0 (Champions League qualifier, July 30, 2008) Roberto Carlos rolled back the years to give Fenerbahce the lead over MTK Budapest, firing a daisy-cutter into the bottom corner from outside the box. The Turks doubled their lead when Selcuk’s deflected shot gave the keeper no chance.

Beitar Jerusalem 2 – Wisla Krakow 1 (Champions League qualifier, July 30, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Krakow moved ahead against when poor communication between Beitar keeper Kale and Ben-Yosef allowed Brozek to sneak in and send a header into an open net. Barochian drew the Israelis back level on the hour mark with a fine shot into the near post, and Barochian then became the hero by adding a fine second, teed up by an incisive pass from Abreu. Wisla had Zienczuk sent off at the death.

Panathanaikos 3 – Dinamo Tblisi 0 (Champions League qualifier, July 30, 2008) Goals from Ivanschitz and two from Salpingidis (44 & 74).

Anorthosis Famagusta 3 – Rapid Vienna 0 (Champions League qualifier, July 30, 2008) Giannis Skopelitis netted one while Lukasz Sosin hit a brace.

Domzale 0 – Dinamo Zagreb 3 (Champions League qualifier, July 30, 2008) Josip Vrdoljak fired Dinamo ahead early from 25 metres. Brazilian Jorge Sammir steered in a penalty and set up the third for striker Josip Tadic.

Anderlecht 1 – BATE Borisov 2 (Champions League qualifier, July 30, 2008) BATE pulled off the shock of the night, coming from behind after Guillaume Gillet put Anderlecht ahead. Anderlecht had Marcin Wasilewski sent off for committing a foul in the box, which allowed Sergey Krivets to equalise and Pavel Nehaicik scored the winner in the 87th minute.

Metalist 3 – Tavriya 0 (Vyscha Liga, July 30, 2008) Gancarczyk opened with a stunning free-kick, Coelho made it two, and Obradovic added the third from the spot.


Ivory Coast 0 – USA 0 (Pre-Olympic friendly, July 30, 2008) The Ivorians offered more goal threat in the Olympic warm-up game, Kafoumba Coulibaly and Sekou Cisse both had good chances which were well saved by Brad Guzan.

Cameroon 0 – Holland 2 (Pre-Olympic friendly, July 30, 2008) Roy Makaay threaded a lovely ball through to Ryan Babel for the opener, and the Liverpool man returned the favour by teeing up Makaay for the second.


New England Revolution 1 – Atlante 0 (SuperLiga, July 30, 2008) Shalrie Joseph headed in Steve Ralston’s free-kick in the 30th minute for the only goal of the game to put the Revs in the SuperLiga final. The game was marred by 40 fouls, 11 yellow cards, two red cards during regulation time, and four more after the final whistle, as the game descended into a punch-up in the final stages.
