Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker explains argument with Mesut Ozil at Man City [Bild]

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has given an interview to German newspaper Bild where he talks about Mesut Ozil, the Champions League tie with Bayern Munich and Germany’s chances at the World Cup.

Mertesacker has arguably been Arsenal’s best player this season, combining terrific performances alongside Laurent Koscielny with presence and leadership from the back.

The “big f***ing German” stoked a small controversy at the end of Arsenal’s 6-3 defeat at Manchester City when he admonished Mesut Ozil for not applauding the Gunners away support at the Etihad.

The interview with Bild is behind a paywall so we are indebted to The Guardian’s Marcus Christenson for translating the best bits.

In the hours since Mertesacker’s comments came online, there has been much debate about the German defender saying: “It can’t just be all happiness, peace and pancakes.”

We are reliably informed that “Friede, Freude und Eierkuchen” (literally meaning “peace, happiness, and pancakes”) is the German idiom for all things good.
