Alvaro Arbeloa appeared on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito earlier this week, to discuss all things Real Madrid.
Among the topics up for discussion was the supposed press campaign against Gareth Bale, with the Welshman increasingly becoming a scapegoat for all of Madrid’s ills.
The criticism has certainly appeared to have an effect on Bale, whose struggles in Madrid are in stark contrast to his brilliant international form with Wales.
Arbeloa lamented the press’ constant focus on Bale, and said the press are being terribly unfair with the ‘poor guy’.
There have been some magnificent players here in Madrid, who in their first year struggled a bit, like Zidane for example.
Look at Gareth: he came and in his first year, was fundamental in us winning the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
‘I don’t know why there’s this obsession with Gareth.
For me he’s an extraordinary footballer, and the good thing about all this is that time will prove people wrong, just as with Modric.
Some terrible things were said about Modric, and now they’re hiding a bit, right?
Well I think the same will happen with Gareth.’
