Catania slumped to a 2-nil home loss at the hands of AC Milan on Saturday night, and the last kick of the match summed up a miserable performance from the Sicilians.
Having been unable to outplay the Rossoneri’s ten-men after Mark van Bommel’s sending-off on his Serie A debut, Catania were shot down by goals from Robinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic as Massimiliano Allegri’s side moved seven points clear at the top of the table. But the hosts should have got themselves on the scoreboard through Simone Pesce, but incredibly the midfielder managed to miss.
Catania coach Diego Simeone could only fidget with his trousers and watch on with disgust as Pesce fluffed a sitter.
Teed up by a wonderful, pacey cross to the back stick by Giuseppe Mascara, all Pesce needed to do was steer the ball into the unguarded net. It was a point-blank, must-score chance. He was a yard out from the empty goal. It should have been a morale boosting moment.
Only it wasn’t, as poor Pesce managed to deny logic and scoop the ball over the bar for a shocking miss.
Simone Pesce’s moment of humiliation can be seen here.
