Saturday’s matchup in the Barclay’s Premier League between Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion promised to be a spirited contest with both teams looking to put themselves in a position to challenge Chelsea for the top spot in the league. While Albion put up a great fight, in the end they fell just shy falling to Manchester City 2-1.
Neither team was able to score during the first half with both goalkeepers exhibiting strong play. Momentum seemingly shifted towards Albion in the first half as James Milner was red carded and Manchester City was forced to play 10 handed.
The match remained scoreless until James Milner put Albion ahead 1-0 at the 67th minute. Albion remained ahead until the 80th minute when Edin Dzeko squared the match with a header following a deep free kick from Carlos Tevez.
Both teams remained tied until injury time when Dzeko scored his second and decisive goal that gave them an unlikely 10-man victory. Romelu Lukaku had nearly won the match for Albion a minute earlier but Joe Hart stopped an overhead kick and gave Manchester City one last shot. A bit later, Sergio Aguero made the pass to Dzeko that resulted in the final goal.
The win by Manchester City puts them into a tie for 2nd in the Premier League with Manchester United. They are both 4 points behind Chelsea. With the loss, Albion may appear to be on the outside looking in for the Premier League title, but they only sit 8 points outside of Chelsea. They are also still in strong contention for the Europa League and the Champions league. They are 4 points behind Manchester United and Manchester City for making the Champions League.
Their overall performance should impressing their new sponsor Zoopla. The team recently changed sponsors back in May after dropping online betting site Bodog as a sponsor. While Albion and Bodog parted mutually, many believe it was due to the fact that US government indicted Calvin Ayre and Bodog for money laundering earlier in the year. Zoopla was a less risky sponsorship choice and Zoopla has to be happy with how their investment is performing.
Albion’s next Premier Leauge match is October 28th against Newcastle United. Newcastle only has one win in their last six Premier League matches so Albion should be in good position for a win. After Newcastle they face Southampton and Wigan, so Albion could put together a nice little win streak prior to a clash with Chelsea on November 17th, a contest that could help shape the top of the Premier League.
