This isn’t the news which Liverpool fans would have liked to have woken up to this Thursday.
Speaking at a Spanish news conference, Liverpool’s Fernando Torres refused to rule out a move away from the Anfield club this summer, insisting that the pursuit of the World Cup is the only thing occupying his attentions at the moment.
His agent, Jose Antonio Peton, appeared to settle the question of his client’s future on Tuesday when telling a Spanish radio station, “For the moment, I can assure fans that Fernando will continue at Liverpool next season.” However, Torres would not endorse those comments in a press conference with his national team on Wednesday and said he was unaware that his agent had spoken to the media.
Despite Torres determination to keep his options open, Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks remained bullish last night about the Merseysiders ability to hold onto their star players.
Hicks: “We have no intention of selling any of our top players and have a substantial transfer budget in place. We will make a significant investment this Âsummer. It’s about getting the right players.”
