A brilliant goal you wont have seen: Veli Kavlak (Rapid Vienna) vs Austria Karnten

Apologises for the delay on bringing this goal to your attention, but despite being a few days behind the curve this goal still needed to be flagged up.

Not much noise is generally heard from the Austrian Bundesliga, but with just eight rounds of matches left in the season locals are preparing themselves for a photo finish. Currently sitting pretty in first place are FC Salzburg, but hot on their heels are Rapid Vienna knowing that, with just a five-point deficit, they still have to host the league leaders at home and the title is still very much in their hands.

Last Saturday Rapid chalked up a crucial 4-2 home win over SK Austria Karnten, but it was the third goal that left tongues wagging.

The opening stages were frantic. Rapid’s Steffen Hofmann laid claim to a quick-fire double while Marc Sand had given the visitors a foothold in the match by also getting on the scoresheet in the early exchanges. Then, 25 minutes in, Rapid midfielder Veli Kavlak picked up the ball almost 30-yards out in the centre of the field, and there was only one thing on his mind.

Pushing the ball leftwards to open up the space in front on him, Kavlak let rip with a stunning left-footed belter that flew past flying keeper Andreas Schranz, the ball cannoning over the line off the underside of the bar. Rapid went on to win the match 4-2.

Kavlak was not the only player to score a terrific goal in Austria last weekend. For Salzburg, Johan Vonlanthen crashed in an unstoppable half-volley, while Rapid’s first scored by Steffen Hofmann was also a superb strike from a free-kick.
