It may be slim pickings for football lovers this weekend, but Hungary’s Nemzeti Bajnokság I (or first division to me and you) is still playing, and it produced a cracking goal in the Honved-Ferencvaros match on Saturday.
The significance of the match was minimal. Honved ran out 2-nil winners, pulling them to within three points of Ferencvaros. But both sides remain marooned in mid-table, neither capable of reaching the top third and claiming a European berth next season.
Honved broke the deadlock in the 51st minute through their Spanish defender Pablo Coira Lojo, but it was the second goal by Angelo Vaccaro in the 79th that made the match memorable.
It should all have been so easy as Vaccaro was faced with a spot-kick, but keeper Balazs Megyeri made a brilliant low save down to his right to palm the ball back out towards the taker. Then, like a tennis player moving in for the serve-volley, Vaccaro positioned himself perfectly for the rebound, connecting with a sweet overhead-kick into the opposite corner.
Amateur footage of Angelo Vaccaro’s goal can be seen here.
