What do you mean you haven’t seen the winner from the Maltese Super Cup match between Hibernians and Sliema Wanderers from last weekend?! Ok, neither had we until we received an email from a Mr. Mark A. Muscat (any relation to the goalscorer, we wonder?) flagging up a superb strike which would likely have otherwise gone unnoticed.
The fact that Sliema, last season’s cup winners in Malta, won the match against the reigning champions Hibs was made that much more surprising considering the Wanderers had young Mark Scerri red carded in the 28th minute of the match. Yet, despite being a man down for over an hour of the contest Sliema reportedly dominated the match, and claimed a winner worthy of winning any football match.
The goal arrived 15 minutes from time. After a brief period of scrappy play on the halfway-line, midfielder Alex Muscat picked up possession just inside the Hibs half and, after sprinting forward a couple of metres, he caught the Hibs number one out of position with an audacious effort that left the keeper helpless.
Muscat’s execution was perfect, cracking home a stunning 45-yard lob that sailed over the goalie’s head and straight into the net.
Alex Muscat’s wonder-strike can be seen here.
