A brilliant goal that never was: Jeremain Lens (AZ Alkmaar) vs Roda

If this goal had gone in it would have been one of the goals of the season.

On Saturday in the Dutch Eredivisie, reigning champions AZ Alkmaar continued to rise up the table after a disappointing season so far as they turned over Roda 2-nil in front of their home fans. The victory was routine enough, but it could have been made that much more special had a tremendous injury time effort from Jeremain Lens hit the back of the net.

With Roda waiting for the final whistle to blow, Maarten Martens found himself one-on-one with a defender on the left-hand side of the visitors’ box. After taking his time to scope out his options, Martens noticed Lens peeling off to the edge of the area and into acres of space.

Martens duly floated a pass over to Jeremain Lens, and with the ball arriving head-high, who acrobatically hit a scissors-kick goalwards. Unfortunately the shot hit the apex over post and bar before cannoning back out to safety.
