Petr Cech leaped to David Ospina’s defence in this radio interview with Talksport yesterday.
Arsenal’s number 1 keeper was surprisingly dropped for the midweek Champions League game against Olympiakos, with David Ospina coming in between the sticks.
And that key change in personnel was pivotal in the game’s outcome, as Ospina dropped a clanger for the Greeks’ second goal.
Arsenal fans were vehement in their criticism of Wenger for playing Ospina over Cech, while strangely ignoring the fact that that with or without Ospina’s mistake, they were still second best to Olympiakos on the night.
And that’s the point Cech makes in his Talksport interview – that the third goal was the one that did the real damage; having just equalized, they lost all shape and cohesion and allowed Olympiakos retake the lead immediately.
‘The biggest blow was we allowed them to score one minute later after coming back to 2-2.
“This was where the game was decided.
We probably went too much with emotion instead of going back to basics after that goal.’
Obviously Cech isn’t going to throw his fellow keeper under the bus, but it’s still nice to see him defend his teammate at a difficult moment.
