Ariel Ortega is no longer a spring chicken.
38-years-young, the flowy-haired Argentine playmaker, is close to bowing out of the professional game after over two decades in the spotlight. Currently without a club, Ortega has gone on record saying “if I keep playing it will be in Argentina,” however it remains unknown whether any suitors will step in to prolong his career further.
Accordingly, on Sunday night the-beginning-of-the-end of Ortega’s career was made plain during a testimonial match in San Juan. Ortega captained a River Plate XI against ‘Friends of San Juan’, and the final scoreline was 7-4 to Ariel and his chums.
Whilst the match was supposed to be all about Ortega (87 Argentinian cap, including 17 goals), the standout performance of the night was reserved for 50-year-old Uruguayan legend Enzo Francescoli.
Francescoli, Uruguay’s highest capped player of all-time, grabbed all the attention with a four-goal haul that included an age-defying bicycle-kick.
