After a rollercoaster night in the Champions League on Tuesday, we can all agree that Liverpool are in fact not back.

In mid-week, the Reds took on Real Madrid in the last 16 and, for a quarter of an hour, it looked like being a night to remember.

Darwin Núñez’s impudent flick broke the deadlock after just four minutes before, shortly after, Mohammed Salah robbed Courtois in possession and doubled their lead.

However, after that, Real Madrid awoke from their slumber, got it back to 2-2 by the break, before scoring three more in 20 second half minutes, eventually leaving Anfield 5-2 winners.

This is just the second time Liverpool have lost by a three-goal margin after leading by two in a home match, also beaten 5-2 by Newton Heath (now Man United) 128 years ago.

To say Jürgen Klopp’s team face an uphill battle at the Bernabéu on 13 March would be a contender for understatement of the century.

They’ve won their last two league games, both 2-0, against Everton and Newcastle, with Núñez and Cody Gakpo on target at St James’ a week ago.

So, if Liverpool win this one and beat Wolves on Wednesday, they’ll be level on points with Newcastle, before the Toon Army next play.

Given what they saw on Tuesday, Crystal Palace will fancy their chances of a victory in this Saturday night clash.

Wins though have been few and far between for Patrick Vieira’s side, who are now without a victory in seven.

The Eagles were denied a much-needed win by Brentford last weekend, taking the lead through Eberechi Eze, but conceding deep into stoppage time.

Nevertheless, despite only winning one of their last ten, Palace, somehow, remain 12th.

Liverpool have won their last eight visits to Selhurst Park, dating back to 2014, but that streak could come to an end here.

Albert Sambi Lokonga made his full-debut at Brentford last weekend, partnering Cheick Doucouré, so could keep his place, chosen over fellow new recruit Naouirou Ahamada.

At the back, they’ve been boosted by the return to fitness of Joachim Andersen, who made his first appearance since 15 January last weekend.

In attack, Jean-Philippe Mateta partnered Jordan Ayew at Brentford, but Odsonne Édouard could return here.

Liverpool team news

Jürgen Klopp named an unchanged XI for Tuesday’s clash with Real Madrid, but may be tempted to tinker a bit.

Joël Matip is likely to come in for Joe Gomez at the back, that’s assuming Virgil van Dijk starts a third game in a week.

Stefan Bajčetić has made himself an undroppable in midfield, so could continue alongside Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

In attack, Mohammed Salah has scored seven goals in his last eight appearances against Palace, looking to further improve that ratio here.
