Chelsea vs Liverpool match preview
These two teams both massively underperformed last season, so this’ll be a fantastic litmus test as we all try to figure out who’s in better shape ahead of the new campaign.
Chelsea, remarkably, finished 12th last year, their lowest finish since being relegated in 1988, concluding a campaign of chaos with Frank Lampard back in charge, having sacked Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.
Mauricio Pochettino is the new man in charge in West London and, following an underwhelming 18-month stint at Paris Saint-Germain, the 51 year old arrives with something to prove.
Plenty of players have left Chelsea this summer, including but not limited to:
Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovačić, N’Golo Kanté, César Azpilicueta, Christian Pulisic, Kalidou Koulibaly, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Édouard Mendy, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and many more.
Despite this, Pochettino still has a massively bloated squad with which to work but, given that the Blues are not in Europe, he’ll have plenty of time to build a coherent team on the training ground.
It’s also been a summer of change for Liverpool, with Fabinho, James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keïta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Roberto Firmino all waving goodbye.
This comes after the Reds came fifth last season, their lowest finish since Jürgen Klopp first arrived in 2015/16, so they’ll have Europa League football to contend with starting next month.
Given this, first and foremost, Liverpool’s aim is to get back into the Champions League, but Klopp will believe they can give Manchester City a run for their money right at the very top of the table.
The last six meetings between Chelsea and Liverpool have all resulted in draws, including the 2022 Carabao and FA Cup Finals, both of which the Reds have won on penalties.
Never before in Premier League history have two teams played out five successive stalemates, so will the sequence of draws be broken at Stamford Bridge?
Chelsea team news
Christopher Nkunku suffered a serious injury during pre-season, ruling him out for four months, which is a massive blow.
Fellow-new recruit Nicolas Jackson impressed during pre-season, so is likely to lead the line, while Axel Disasi, Lesley Ugochukwu and Ângelo Gabriel will all also be hoping to make their debuts.
Wesley Fofana could miss the entire campaign, following reconstructive knee surgery, which is as horrific as it sounds, so Levi Colwill, who’s signed a long contract extension this summer, will be at centre-back.
In goal, Kepa Arrizabalaga is likely to be the starting number one, despite the arrival of his compatriot Robert Sánchez.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Arrizabalaga; James, Colwill, Thiago Silva, Chilwell; Fernández, Gallagher, Sterling, Chukwuemeka, Mudryk; Jackson.
Liverpool team news
Liverpool’s two new recruits can both be found in midfield, with Dominik Szoboszlai arriving from RB Leipzig and Alexis Mac Allister joining from Liverpool.
Both are likely to start, but Jürgen Klopp’s team are still missing a defensive midfielder, following Jordan Henderson and Fabinho’s sudden departures to Saudi Arabia.
Stefan Bajčetić remains sidelined from last season, so Curtis Jones is likely to fill in at the base of midfield, which certainly isn’t ideal.
Going forward though, Klopp has an array of options, with five players battling for three spots.
Mohammed Salah is a guaranteed starter, against his former club of course, but any of Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez, Cody Gakpo or Diogo Jota could line-up alongside.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, van Dijk, Konaté, Robertson; Jones, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Gakpo, Núñez.
