Jamaica vs Trinidad and Tobago match preview
After both made positive starts to their CONCACAF Gold Cup campaigns at the weekend, which one of these two Caribbean rivals will prevail in St. Louis?
In the tournament’s opening game on Saturday night, Jamaica faced holders USA at Soldier Field and were undisputedly the better team for large stretches of the game.
The Reggae Boyz took the lead after just 13 minutes when Demarai Gray, on debut, fired a free-kick into the box that was headed home by Damion Lowe.
That’s how the score remained in Chicago until, with just two minutes remaining, the United States found an equaliser, denying Jamaica a famous victory.
Nevertheless, this still represents a positive point for Heimir Hallgrímsson’s team, who will be heavy favourites to win their two remaining Group A fixtures.
Jamaica reached back-to-back Gold Cup Finals in 2015 and 2017 and, based on their performance on opening night, the Reggae Boyz have to be amongst the favourites to go all the way.
The Soca Warriors took on minnows Saint Kitts & Nevis at DRV PNK Stadium on Sunday afternoon, cruising to a 3-0 victory.
Alvin Jones broke the deadlock on the cusp of half time, Ajani Fortune fired home a second before an own goal wrapped up the points, with Levi García’s low cross deflecting in.
That was Trinidad & Tobago’s first victory at the Gold Cup since 2015, which is the last time they featured in the knockout stages.
Now though, if Angus Eve’s team win here, they would be through to the quarter-finals, ahead of Sunday’s final group game against USA in North Carolina.
Jamaica though are likely to be too strong at CityPark.
Jamaica team news
Jamaica deployed their new fantastic front four for the first time on Saturday night.
Demarai Gray made his senior international debut, alongside Leon Bailey, Bobby Decordova-Reid and Michail Antonio, all of whom are regulars in the Premier League.
At the back, Ethan Pinnock is dealing with an injury, so Adrian Mariappa won his 68th cap, partnering Damion Lowe, the man who scored against USA.
Dexter Lembikisa, who’s made just one senior appearances for club side Wolverhampton Wanderers, will keep his place at right-back, despite his lack of senior expirence.
Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Blake; Lembikisa, Mariappa, Lowe, Bell; Lambert, Latibeaudiere, Bailey, Decordova-Reid, Gray; Antonio.
Trinidad and Tobago team news
Levi García is Trinidad & Tobago’s obvious danger man, having scored 18 times for Greek Super League champions AEK Athens this season.
Ajani Fortune came on an hour into Sunday’s win over St Kitts & Nevis, scoring just six minutes later, hoping this contribution will earn him a start this time.
In goal, Nicklas Frenderup will keep his place, once again chosen over long-standing number one Marvin Phillip.
Right-back Alvin Jones bagged his third international goal at the weekend, two of which have come this month, also netting in a friendly win over Guatemala.
Before that, Jones hadn’t scored for T&T in six years, netting against the U.S. in that World Cup qualifier in Couva.
Predicted XI (4-5-1): Frenderup; A. Jones, Bateau, Bateau, Hodge; Hackshaw, Fortune, Molino, Telfer, Auvray; García.
