Preview for Real Madrid v Real Mallorca

La Liga may be all but gone but Real Madrid won’t be lacking motivation when they host Real Mallorca tomorrow night.

Sunday’s 4-3 defeat in a breathtaking Clasico against Barcelona means the Catalans have one hand on the trophy – they hold a seven-point lead with just three games to go – but Madrid will hope to extend the wait for Hansi Flick and his players for as long as possible.

If Madrid draw with the Balearic Islanders, the title will be Barca’s due to their superior head-to-head record. A Madrid win means Barcelona can clinch it with victory against city rivals Espanyol on Thursday.

“The final games are always competitive,” said coach Carlo Ancelotti. “We have significant injury problems but we will try to get a competitive team out and win these three [remaining] games. The league is not over. We don’t want to deliver it [on a plate]. We want to end a difficult season well.”

Whatever happens this week, the trophy is bound for Catalonia with Madrid heading into a summer of change.

Ancelotti confirmed yesterday he was leaving after the Liga season, and prior to the Club World Cup, to take over as head coach of the Brazil national side. His replacement will be Xabi Alonso, who has confirmed his departure from Bayer Leverkusen and is set to return to the Santiago Bernabeu where he starred as a cultured midfielder.

It has been disappointing final year at Madrid but Ancelotti is confident his time at the club will be remembered fondly.

He said: “I have never felt that Madrid did not love me. Madrid loves me. It has always shown me affection.

“I couldn’t be Madrid’s coach all my life. This ends for many reasons.

“The club may need a fresh impetus. I don’t make a drama of this. Many thanks to this club, I will be from Madrid all my life. It’s a period that ends. Spectacular. I never thought I could coach Madrid for six years and it’s over.”

Mallorca may not claim many headlines but they have very quietly had an excellent season.

They will arrive in the capital in ninth place and still very much in the mix for European qualification. They came from behind to beat already-relegated Real Valladolid 2-1 at the weekend.

Team News for Real Madrid v Real Mallorca

Madrid’s season has been blighted by injuries and they show no sign of easing with Lucas Vazquez and Vinicius Jr the latest to be struck down.

Neither will play in midweek although the club did not give a timeline for their return.

Vazquez’s setback means Fede Valverde will likely have to revert to a right-back position. Rodrygo would have been the obvious replacement for Vinicius Jr but the Brazil international left training this morning with a leg injury amid continued speculation regarding his Madrid future.

Aurelien Tchouameni is suspended, so Jacobo Ramon may come in.

Mallorca boss Jagoba Arrasate is without the injured Manu Morlanes, Robert Navarro and Abdon Prats.

Chiquinho missed the win over Valladolid and is a doubt.

Prediction for Real Madrid v Real Mallorca

This is a nasty game for Madrid and if they start to struggle, the crowd could make it very unpleasant.

It might not be an atmosphere Ancelotti would have wanted but patience has worn thin.

The hosts are down to the bare bones in defence, the question is whether Mallorca are good enough to exploit it?

Prediction: Real Madrid 3-2 Real Mallorca
