Are Spurs cursed at Wembley?
Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville discussed that topic on Monday Night Football, more than 24 hours after Tottenham fell to defeat in their first ‘home’ game of the season. A late winner for Chelsea adds to the myth.
In reality, Spurs played well and were undone by a rousing performance from the reigning Premier League champions. But it follows a sequence of poor results at Wembley in Europe and the FA Cup for Spurs.
Are they really so poor?
As Carragher and Neville point out, it’s not so much that Spurs are poor at Wembley but rather that the opposition raise their game. Neville remarked that Sunday’s clash had a cup final atmosphere.
And while Chelsea can expect to return to Wembley many times over the next few years, games at the ‘home of football’ are few and far between for smaller sides in the Premier League.
They want to give their fans a day to remember.
