“I have made a big mistake which, of course, I cannot excuse. This will never happen to me again.” - Franco Costanzo.
We’ve seen Hartson versus Berkovic. Bowyer versus Dyer. And now the less well known battle between FC Basel keeper Franco Costanzo and centre-half Beg Ferati.
Crazy scenes broke out at the full time whistle in Switzerland on Saturday after Basel’s 1-all draw with FC Zurich in the Swiss Super League. With tensions running high a heated debate broke out between Costanzo and Ferati before things quickly turned nasty and words were replaced with physical contact.
With the pair firing accusations at each other almost nose-to-nose, television replays caught Ferati eventually losing his rag as he shoved Costanzo in an attempt to ground the goalie. After maintaining his balance Costanzo immediately retaliated by adopting the girlie tactics of hair-pulling.
Being closest to the scene, the warring parties had to be split up by Zurich forward Eric Hassli before fellow Basel teammates managed to split the fighting twosome apart.
According to reports, Basel have since ordered the 28-year-old Costanzo, who could still be suspended by the Swiss league, to pay an undisclosed amount toward a program that promotes responsible fan behavior.
Footage of Franco Costanzo versus Beg Ferati can be seen here.
