When Cheats Prosper: Frederik Faes (Green-Red Katelijne) vs Eendracht Zoersel

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Although not keen followers of semi-professional Belgium football, we simply could not avoid bringing you this clip capturing a horrible act of bad sportsmanship. The footage comes from the match between Green-Red Katelijne (in the black, red and green strip) and Eendracht Zoersel last weekend.

The unwritten rule in football is that if one team purposely kicks the ball out of play in order that a player can receive medical treatment, the opposing team should return to ball to the side that brought about the stoppage.

Sadly, Katelijne forward Frederik Faes chose to ignore the widely held convention, much to the displeasure of the Zoersel, and it was no surprise that Faes required a police escort to help him leave the scene of the crime unscathed after the match.

Proving himself to be a bad sport, Frederik Faes’ goal against Eendracht Zoersel can be seen here.

    hi thank you
Equally unimpressed by the prospect of a Google-Twitter deal was Richard Laermer, CEO of RLM and author of Punk Marketing. Still, the fact that Twitter has not registered a steady cash flow yet was not at the root of his concerns.

I believe I commented on a similar video linked to maybe a year or more ago…but (possibly due to regional/national differences) we are taught to encourage teams NOT to play the ball out of touch in case of injury. Sportsmanlike, possibly, but over the last couple of years cert classes and assessors have been emphasizing that referee’s should stop play (if warranted) and not the players.

If it happened at a game I was officiating I’d certainly agree with the poor sportsmanship, but I’d also remind the teams that they’re under no obligation to play a ball out of touch if someone goes down and I’ll usually call out a “Play on!” unless something immediate is warranted.

There is an obligation its called playing with class and thats the least you can do

I understand that sentiment, but what we’re being taught is to tell the clubs to stop it. The point, as I see it, is to stop delaying tactics, preventing a player who goes to ground after a tackle from writhing around, when perfectly fine, only to get a rest and possibly stop the oppositions momentum when they choose to be “sportsmanlike” and play the ball out of touch, etc.

I agree with Greg C. Sir Alex Ferguson and Fabio Capello have a simple stance on this - we won’t kick it out for you, and we don’t expect you to either! Leave it up to the referee or a natural stoppage in play.
