Manchester United 1 - Sunderland 0 (Premier League, December 6, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Managerless Sunderland got to half-time without conceding, Berbatov went close early doors after a flick from Ronaldo and then the Bulgarian nearly flicked home from a Rooney shot. After the break United continued to miss the target when Berbatov sent a header over the bar, but just as it seemed that the game would end goalless Nemanja Vidic scored a vital 91st minute winner after Michael Carrick’s deflected shot came back off the post.
Blackburn 1 - Liverpool 3 (Premier League, December 6, 2008) Morten Gamst Pederson was desperately unlucky not give give Rovers the lead when his swerving shot crashed the Liverpool crossbar. Goals from Xabi Alonso and Yossi Benayoun put Liverpool in charge, only for Roque Santa Cruz to give the home side some hope before Steven Gerrard wrapped up the points in the final moments of the game.
Bolton 0 - Chelsea 2 (Premier League, December 6, 2008) Nicolas Anelka returned to haunt his old club by heading home Boswinga’s cross to give the Blues the lead at the Reebok. And after his recent slump Deco returned to form with a brilliant scissor-kick after the Trotters failed to clear a Chelsea attack.
Arsenal 1 - Wigan 0 (Premier League, December 6, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Arsenal took an early lead over Wigan thanks to Emmanuel Adebayor’s collected finish after 16 minutes. (First half highlights here.)
Fulham 1 - Manchester City 1 (Premier League, December 6, 2008) City led in the sixth minute through Benjani’s header from Zabaleta’s cross, but the Cottagers equalised through Jimmy Bullard’s first goal of the season, a fine strike into the far corner of the net.

Newcastle 2 - Stoke City 2 (Premier League, December 6, 2008) Michael Owen opened the scoring in the eighth minutes from a Gutierrez cross and then Owen doubled the lead on 24, sliding home a Martins cross. But Stoke showed real quality in the second half to equalise thanks to goals from Sidibe (’60) and Faye (’90).
Hull 2 - Middlesbrough 1 (Premier League, December 6, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Tuncay put Boro in front but an og from Ross Turnbull and a Marlon King penalty secured another three points for Hull.

Barcelona 4 - Valencia 0 (La Liga, December 6, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) With 19 minutes gone Henry raced onto Yaya Toure’s pass and finished confidently with a deft lob. Eight minutes later Henry finished off a brilliant move started by a raking pass from Alves, side-footing in after Alexander Hleb cut the ball back. Dani Alves put Pep Guardiola’s side three up just after the break and Henry completed his hat-trick late on to wrap up a highly impressive Barcelona win.
Villarreal 3 - Getafe 3 (La Liga, December 6, 2008) The Yellow Submarine were sunk by three goals inside 28 minutes as Getafe ran riot at the Madrigal. Granero and Gavilan each scored superb volleys for the visitors before Casquero found the bottom corner with a low drive. The hosts pulled a goal back in the second half as Villarrael pressure eventually saw the ball ricochet off Robert Pires. And then the hosts staged a fabulous comeback in the final ten minutes, Sebastian Eguren’s volley made it 2-3 before Giuseppe Rossi kept up his fine scoring record to equalise.
Sporting Gijon 2 - Atletico Madrid 5 (La Liga, December 6, 2008) Mate Bilic opened the scoring for the home side before Sergio Aguero netted a brace prior to the interval. Diego Forlan bagged a double of his own while Maxi Rodriguez was on target, as David Barral hit a consolation.

Lazio 0 - Inter Milan 3 (Serie A, December 6, 2008) A powerful header from Inter’s Walter Samuel on the run put Mourinho’s boys ahead at Lazio. De Silvestri flashed a shot wide as the hosts looked to equalise, while Zlatan displayed amazing agility with an overhead-pass to play in Stankovic down the right hand side. Inter doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime when Diakite turned the ball into his own net from Maicon’s cross. In the second half Ibrahimovic added a third from Cambiasso’s free-kick.
Chievo 0 - Roma 1 (Serie A, December 6, 2008) Roma’s upsurge continued at bottom-side Chievo, the Flying Donkeys shot down by a brilliant volley from Jeremy Menez in the 69th minute.
Livorno 3 - Salernitana 0 (Serie B, December 6, 2008) Tavano’s tap-in, Candreva’s long-range effort and a trademark Diamanti free-kick gave Livorno the points.
Grosseto 1 - Cittadella 1 (Serie B, December 6, 2008) Cittadella, battling relegation, took the lead through Meggiorini’s left-foot strike. Sansovini snatched a precious point in the second half, showing strength to batter down the defence and convert Valeri’s assist.
Brescia 1 - Albinoleffe 0 (Serie B, December 6, 2008) Possanzini’s fourth goal of the campaign proved enough to win the local derby in Brescia’s third consecutive victory.
Parma 1 - Avellino 0 (Serie B, December 6, 2008) Parma continued their renaissance to move joint second along with Sassuolo, Grosseto and Brescia. Danish defender Troest became the unlikely hitman by nodding in a set play.

Schalke 1 - Hertha Berlin 0 (Bundesliga, December 6, 2008) Gerald Asamoah got the only goal with a back post header in the 65th minute.
Borussia Monchengladbach 1 - Bayer Leverkusen 3 (Bundesliga, December 6, 2008) Stefan Keissling burst through for the opener on 25 minutes, twelve minutes later Keissling got the second as well, tapping into an empty net. Helmes added a third early in the second half and Jantshke pulled one back with half-an-hour to go.
Karlsruhe 1 - Werder Bremen 0 (Bundesliga, December 6, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Josh Kennedy grabbed the winner with seven minutes to go.

Nantes 2 - Lyon 1 (Ligue 1, December 6, 2008) Lyon opened the scoring just before halftime with a close-range shot by Frederic Piquionne but Ivan Klasnic equalised on 59 minutes after keeper Hugo Lloris could only parry an effort by David de Freitas. Klasnic then bagged the winner a minute from time, converting a penalty after a foul by Lamine Gassama.
Bordeaux 2 - Valenciennes 1 (Ligue 1, December 5, 2008) Marouane Chamakh opened the scoring after 35 minutes when he headed home a cross from Wendel, but Valenciennes fought back and Gregory Pujol put them level with a powerful left shot before the interval. However, two minutes after the break Fernando Cavenaghi restored Bordeaux’s advantage, which they held onto for the win.

Vitoria Setubal 0 - Porto 3 (SuperLiga, December 6, 2008) Bruno Alves opened, and two minutes later Freddy Guarin double the lead. Lucho Gonzalez capped the scoring in the 80th to keep Porto unbeaten at Bonfim Stadium for 15 years.

Estrela Amadora 1 - Sporting Lisbon 3 (SuperLiga, December 5, 2008) Amadora took the lead through Anselmo’s fifth minute opener, but Izmailov equalised for Sporting four minutes later. Sporting then took the lead through Liedson on 50 minutes, Vukcevic wrapping up the win with the third.

PSV 4 - Groningen 2 (Eredivisie, December 6, 2008) The visitors raced into a two-goal lead thanks to strikes by Marcus Berg and Goran Lovre. But PSV ripped their opponents to shreds after the break and four goals in 14 minutes from Otman Bakkal (first and second) and Danko Lazovic (first and second), who scored two apiece.

Anderlecht 5 - Tubize 1 (Jupiler League, December 6, 2008) Anderlecht moved into first place with an easy win over Tubize, Frutos, Boussoufa and Gillet gave Anderlecht a comfortable lead by halftime and Polak went on to add the fourth a few minutes after the interval. Perbet pulled a goal back for the away side but Legear immediately replied for the hosts.
Standard Liege 1 - Zulte-Waregem 2 (Jupiler League, December 6, 2008) Standard were on course for a win when Mbokani opened the score just before the break, but Meert levelled for Zulte in the 62nd minute and Subotic scored a dramatic late winner to shock the home crowd.

Xanthi 1 - Panathinaikos 2 (Greek Super League, December 6, 2008) Gilberto Silva scored a rare goal to give Pana the lead away from home but in the 57th minute Souanis levelled for the hosts. Sarriegi then saw a straight red for the visitors on the hour mark, but Ten Cate’s men still managed to take the three points as Rukavina netted the winner on the break with seven minutes to go.
OFI Crete 0 - Aris 1 (Greek Super League, December 6, 2008) A cheeky near-post shot (or was it a cross?) from Toni Calvo caught out the home goalie for the winner.

But the Mariners levelled with a super strike of their own, Andre Gumprecht fired home a low drive after the Roar failed to clear their line with seven minutes remaining.
