VIDEO: Liverpool suffer more disappointment in Birmingham draw; Henderson spot on to earn Sheff United a draw at Barnsley; Millwall dump AFC Wimbledon out the FA Cup

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Liverpool 2 - Birmingham 2 (Premier League, November 9, 2009) The night started well at Anfield as Liverpool took the lead, Hart made a brilliant double stop from David Ngog and Dirk Kuyt, Riera hooked the ball back across the goal and Ngog hit a ferocious left-footed volley into the roof of the net. Birmingham equalised in the 25th minute from a set piece, Christian Benitez eventually turning the ball home from four yards. And then on the stroke of halftime Birmingham silenced the home crowd, Cameron Jerome plucked a ball out the air with a fantastic first touch before letting rip with a swerving 35-yard howitzer that whizzed past Riena. Liverpool cranked up the pressure after the break, Steven Gerrard hitting the post with a header. With just over 20 minutes on the clock Liverpool won a penalty, Ngog diving under a challenge from Lee Carsley, and Steven Gerrard dispatched the spot kick for 2-2.

Barnsley 2 - Sheffield United 2 (Championship, November 9, 2009) Anderson De Silva controlled and calmly fired into the corner for Barnsley before Darius Henderson hit a post and then blasted in a penalty to level. Daniel Bogdanovic had twice been denied by Ian Bennett before bundling in from close range but Henderson struck again from the spot.

Millwall 4 - AFC Wimbledon 1 (FA Cup round one, November 9, 2009) Neil Harris set the Lions on their way shortly after halftime before sub Jason Price struck with his first touch. Lewis Taylor got one back for the Dons before Danny Schofield extended the advantage and Price delivered the knock-out blow two minutes from time.

Benfica 1 - Associacao Naval 0 (Superliga, November 9, 2009) Javi Garcia grabbed the only goal of the game just four minutes from time to send Benfica top.

AEK Athens 3 - Larisa 1 (Greek Super League, November 9, 2009) Pereira Romeu cancelled out Daniel Majstorovic’s opener to make it 1-1 at halftime, before Ismael Blanco’s 51st minute penalty restored AEK’s lead. The hosts added a third through substitute Krisztian Nemeth after 64 minutes. AEK are 13 points behind leaders Panathinaikos.

FC Basel 4 - Xamax 1 (Swiss Super League, November 9, 2009) Australian midfielder Scott Chipperfield opened the scoring for Basel in the 40th minute, with Alexander Frei restoring their lead via a 58th-minute penalty after Ideye Brown had equalised for the visitors three minutes earlier. Further goals in the final two minutes from Xherdan Shaqiri and Marco Streller gave the scoreline a more one-sided look, while the defeat left Neuchatel five points behind their opponents in third.

Huracan 1 - Arsenal 1 (Apertura, November 9, 2009) A thunderous Trecco drive at the start of the second half put Huracan ahead, Galvan sweeping home a scrappy equaliser in injury time.

  1. english fans are hypocrites Says:

nice dive. so sick of hearing these fag epl fans talk about diving in la liga and serie a when their own players do it even more. fuck epl, trash league thats only good because of foreigners.

    fuck you england

  2. neli g Says:

Why are English fans hypocrites? To my knowledge we’re the only ones who complain about it! N’gog is a diving cheat, and he’ll get barracked now by everyone. Watch him do it again…

  3. chucho benitez Says:

    fuck the dippers.

  4. al Says:

    Where’s N’gog from again?

  5. pla Says:

    From Cheatania, Diver Meadows.

  6. cizzle Says:

great argument ‘english fans are hypocrites’it must be true what i heard; that ANY debate can be settled with the closing line ‘f-you’…

diving IS worse on the continent FACT. And ditto neli g, he will get so much abuse for diving - abuse he wouldnt recieve for theatrics in the spanish or italian leagues!

  7. Bobo Says:

What an outrageous dive. He must get the same penalty that Eduardo got if UEFA are to have any credibility. Eduardo’s dive didn’t even change the result, this dive gave Liverpool a draw instead of yet another loss.

Simply ridiculous. I understand that the referee missed seeing what actually happened but punitive measures must be taken against NGog. Goal technology should used like in tennis, this is outrageous.

Sure, Ngog will be booed but that is not enough. I was angry when Eduardo was given a ban because I figured that the punishments would not be evenly dealt out.

  8. star_bury Says:

I’m a Liverpool fan and dives that that should be punished far more severely than they are. A dive outside the box, yellow card. A dive in the box, straight red.

Same as the “last man” rule, just vice versa. Those tackles turn from yellow to red if you’re the last man….

  9. daz Says:

Birmingham fan here. We were under the cosh and didn’t deserve a win. But Liverpool didn’t even deserve a draw, poor finishing long forgotten by a blatant case of cheating.

2 points means a lot to relegation candidates. Cheers Ngog… *sigh*

  10. Mikemaniac Says:

Ngog is a young lad coping extremely well with the pressure of filling Torres’ boots. He was on an excellent run at pace in the box, I can think of quite a few experienced pro’s who would have done exactly the same thing.

It’s never good to dive or cheat in anyway but poor referee decisions have cheated Liverpool out of many points this season already.

  11. emily Says:

N’gog is from France. and how in the world did he dive? unless i missed it.. i’ve watched it more than 5times still couldnt see it.

  12. Wagabagashaga Says:

I think we’re talking about intent here.

Defenders flying in and missing means it’s a foul/penalty.
Ngog could see it coming so he got out of the way.
    It’s still a foul.
    Especially at home.

    Arsenal fan here.
Eduardo got off by the way.

  13. Brenton Says:

On Jerome’s goal (what a stunner), he held off Mascherano without much trouble at all, and Mascherano was trying to muscle him from behind rather than running beside to cut him off. Weak.

  14. Brenton Says:

And Wagabagahageklalk;e, there may have been some intent to tackle but Ngog could easily, easily kept running. Easily. Never a penalty.

  15. lee Says:

to the person that said N’gog is from France. and how in the world did he dive? unless i missed it.. i’ve watched it more than 5times still couldnt see it. i think u need to watch it another 5 x cuz it was a blatent dive coming from a birmingham city fan yes i agree we didnt deserve to win and im happy with a draw but that was just disgraceful

  16. Wagabagashaga is an IDIOT Says:

Wagabagashaga, what are you talking about? Such bullshit.

Carsley didn’t make any contact at all with N’Gog, therefore it is NOT a penalty.

Please stop watching football, you clearly don’t understand it.

  17. football gifts Says:

Again your heart sinks in despair for the smaller club when a somewhat dubious decision by the ref is given in favour to the bigger club and results in a penalty been given. There is no doubt that Carsley did not even touch Ngog. It’s a sad state of interaction when players may as well take up swimming than to play an honest game of football. The refs judgment is shocking in this case and completely wrong but he just goes with what he sees- obviously not that much. Liverpool were the stronger side the first half but that seemed to fade away in the second. Birmingham’s set piece was top notch to set up Benitez and the cracker by Jerome; you just can’t get much better than that from 30 odd yards out, brilliant. Okay the pressure was applied by Liverpool in the final minutes but Birmingham held on. Whether or not Liverpool deserved the draw with their over-all performance is debatable but to get it the way they did is shameful. As for Birmingham they can go away – yes gutted and robbed but at least with their heads held high in going to Anfield and getting the draw. Can Liverpool do the same – not a chance!

  18. Kenny Hackney Says:

All these people posting comments about the premier league and english especilly being hypoctitical are talking a bunch of cock.

It is the best league in the world because we have talent from all round the world on show. Unfortunately we cannot control the mentality of players that come to our country from abroad. The diving culture is instilled into them from the countries who have having a go now.

Where are the divers from? not england i tell ya! ngog (france), Eduardo (brazil/croatia) drogba (africa) all diving cheats. not an englishman among them!

  19. Dave Blokey Bloke Says:

Steven Gerrard’s famous ‘we don’t like diving in England’ pronouncement sums up the hypocrisy of English players. The idea that diving is a foreign import is bollocks. It’s time to get over that English ‘fair play’ myth too.
