The myth is dead! Long live the King!
For years, this was as close as football fans got to “seeing” that goal. (Click here.)
For almost a quarter of a century football fans have had to be content with whispers and rumours; the moment that none of the 41,291 Anfield spectators privileged enough to witness it that night will ever forget.
Jan Molby’s strike for Liverpool against Manchester United in their 2-1 Milk Cup win in November 1985 is widely regarded as the best goal never seen. Scored during the infamous TV blackout of 1985/86, the goal has taken on near-mythical status as only those present have ever been able to talk about how Rambo won the ball with a crunching tackle on Norman Whiteside, before taking on the entire United defence before unleashing a howitzer into the net under the watchful eye of the Kop.
The only footage of the game was recorded by a single police surveillance camera in the Anfield gantry. After the match, Jan was generously given the only copy of the game by defeated United manager Ron Atkinson, and finally the Kop legend has given LFC TV the footage for public release.
For the first time ever Jan Molby’s wonder-goal against Manchester United can finally be watched by all.
Watch the footage here.

why did Ron Atkinson have the only copy to give to Jan if it was filmed by police at Anfield?

I don’t get it: -
This was ‘the only tape of the game’…
…recorded by a police surveillance camera – which appears to have been surveying the game in great detail, to the extent of actively following the play…
…at *Anfield*, although the tape was given to Molby by *United* boss, Ron Atkinson
…and the footage includes sound and even commentary.
Maybe I have been watching too many Scooby Doo mysteries, or something, but something just doesn’t add up here. Anyone care to explain what I’m missing?
James.

Great goal! Chased down 2 United players to get the ball in his own half in the first place, powered his way past several defenders and then unleashed a bullet.
A blue collar version of Maradonna Vs England (Which, now that I think of it, came a year AFTER this goal).
And yes, the stuff about police surveillance cameras and Ron Atkinson just doesn’t add up.

Yeah right, surveillance camera footage.
Better than some tv coverage i have seen.

I didn’t know he could move so fast, but who would dare get in the way? Any goal against Manure is a great one but I really enjoyed it. Nice one Jan

load of nonsense about police surveillance tape. the game was broadcast live in denmark on the night, although there was a tv blackout in england. molby confirms this himself in his autobiography. the commentary dubbed onto it comes from liverpools radio city coverage on the night, commentator is gary bloom who went on to be a tv commentator. also working at radio city at same time was clive tyldesley.
