The second half of 2009 may have been a debacle for Liverpool football club as a whole, but the last match of the decade for the Reds saw Fernando Torres reach a historic milestone, as El Nino chalked up his 50th Premier League goal for the Merseysiders.
Torres’ 50th came in stoppage time in Liverpool’s away match with Aston Villa on the 29th of December. The match appeared to be heading for yet another disappointing draw for Liverpool, only for Torres to rescue the three points for the Reds and revive their ambitions for success in the league this term.
The winner at Villa Park ensured that Torres scored his 50 goals in just 72 Premier League games. The record made Fernando Torres the fastest Liverpool player to reach the half-century in the club’s history.
While Torres’ record is exemplary, the Spaniard is not the fastest player to score 50 Premier League goals. Former Manchester united hotshot Andy Cole reached the milestone in just 65 games, while Alan Shearer and Ruud van Nistelroy also hit the 50-mark more quickly than the Liverpool forward.
