FC Midtjylland 0 - Manchester City 1* (Agg. 1-1) (UEFA Cup, August 28, 2008) City were seconds away from defeat but Midtjylland tragically conceded an own from American defender Danny Califf, before the visitors wrapped up the game on penalties. Joe Hart was impressive in goal in the shootout, saving two attempts ,before Vedran Corluka nailed their final penalty for a 4-2 advantage and a place in the main event.
Aston Villa 1 - Hafnarfjordur 1 (Agg. 5-2) (UEFA Cup, August 28, 2008) Craig Gardner put the home side ahead in the 27th minute, Atli Bjornsson tied the match three minutes later.
St. Patricks 2 - Elfsborg 1 (Agg. 4-3) (UEFA Cup, August 28, 2008) The League of Ireland side looked to be heading out after Stefan Ishizaki put the visitors in front on 63 minutes, but late goals from Jason Gavin (86) and Mark Quigley (90) turned the tie on its head.

Netanya pressed hard after the break but were caught on the counter-attack with 12 minutes left as substitute Ricardo Andre’s angled volley decided the game.

Vermouth then extended the lead on 58 minutes with a deflected shot from 25 metres before Abutbul completed the scoring from the penalty spot 14 minutes from time.

Blackburn 4 - Grimsby 1 (League Cup, August 27, 2008) A foul by debutant Carlos Villanueva allowed Mariners’ full back Tom Newey to step up and beat Blackburn’s deputy keeper James Brown. A 20-yard Villanueva curler levelled matters, before Matt Derbyshire gave Rovers the lead on 32 minutes. Derbyshire then turned provider for Brett Emerton for Blackburn’s third, before Derbyshire wrapped things up on 55 minutes.
Fulham 3 - Leicester 2 (League Cup, August 27, 2008) Zoltan Gera had given the home side a lead on the half-hour mark, Paul Dickov equalised a minute into the second half and Andy King put Nigel Pearson’s side ahead with a curler two minutes later. Jimmy Bullard struck an equaliser six minutes from time, before Danny Murphy claimed a last gasp winner.

With four minutes remaining Phil Bardsley proved the most unlikely of heroes when he popped up in Forest’s box to convert El Hadji-Diouf’s cross-cum-shot from close range. David Healy found the winner in the first period of extra-time, when he snapped up the rebound after Grant Leadbitter’s shot was saved.
