The Sun go with a bold claim on Wednesday morning concerning Manchester United’s search for a front line striker to return them to Premier League title challengers next season.

According to The Currant Bun, “Manchester United are closing in on Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic.”

Mandzukic has emerged as the leading candidate to play up front with Wayne Rooney in 2015/2016 under Louis van Gaal.

Manchester United are undoubtedly looking for new strikers this summer. Radamel Falcao has returned to Monaco after a poor loan spell. Whilst Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez do not appear to have long term futures under LVG.

Whether Mario Mandzukic is the answer for van Gaal though seems seriously questionable.

The Croatian striker has established himself as a good option up front for Bayern Munich and over the past season Atletico Madrid, but not many pundits would categorise him as “world class”.

Whilst Mandzukic will give his all and can ruffle defences, surely Sevilla striker Carlos Bacca is still a better option.

The Sun suggest that Bacca’s inability to dislodge Radamel Falcao for Colombia is working against him at Old Trafford.

Surely Manchester United, with all their wealth, and now back in the Champions League, should be aiming higher than Mario Mandzukic?!

Perhaps Mandzukic’s agent is looking for a better deal at Atletico, or the Croat is worried about the imminent arrival of Luciano Vietto at the Vicente Calderon?
