It’s easy to fall into hyperbole, but this week’s collection of golazos is really ridonkulous.
In a long list of also-runs, Matthias Lepiller (solo stunner), Ahmed Saleh (what a lob!), Matias Saurez (a half-volley par excellence), Nahuel Fioretto (halfway-line golazo) and Roberto Torres (a 40-yard lob) all have plenty of reason to be pissed that they didn’t make the cut. If truth be told, if they were more famous they probably would have made their way into the top ten.
But enough about those who didn’t make the cut. Onto those who did.
AFCON 2012 witnessed it’s first true golazo in position one in our list, followed by a terrific looping half-volley from a rehabilitated Black Cat at spot two, while it was back to Africa for goal three and a world-class free-kick from Yaya.
A former Magpie claimed a quick-thinking, injury time, 60-yarder at position four, a no-lift thunderbolt from a random Brazilian left-back appears at five, while goal six brings a jaw-dropping acrobatic goal of the week from a little-known Brazilian striker.
Goal seven is a goal covered in finesse and precision shooting from Portugal, and goal eight presents an outstanding who-needs-to-look-at-the-goal flick from Italy.
That leaves two: Newcastle’s new number nine left an indelible mark on St James’ Park on Sunday with that goal on debut, whilst Juan Mata almost punched a hole in Manchester United’s net with his delicious volley at Stamford Bridge.
