The 101 Greatest Goals of 2008/2009

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

First and foremost, it gives us great pleasure to present to you our official 101 Greatest Goals of the 2008-09 season, and we hope you enjoy reliving the list almost as much as we had fun putting it together.

The past three years have been one hell of a roller-coaster. What started as a back-handed discussion between Ronaldo and myself as to “wouldn’t it be great if there was one site which collated all the football goal videos online,” quickly spawned the birth of 101 Great Goals, and the response we have received since starting back in the summer of 2006 has simply been incredible.

Every year we have gone from strength to strength, attracting an ever-increasing audience as we have simultaneously continued to grow the site. From the “Goals” came the “Blog,” and from the “Blog” came the new “Betting” and “Livescore” pages. But this remains just the start. We are far from finished in our dreams of building the best independent football website on the internet.

This summer will again see more developments take shape on 101 Great Goals, with new and exciting features currently being developed in our top secret headquarters. Stay tuned throughout the summer to see these new features being rolled out, with our hope being that come the start of the 2009/2010 season a fresh-faced 101 Great Goals will be in place.

Obviously, none of this would be possible without you.

Whether it be by email, by comments or by referrals, the constant love and feedback we have received over the years has been the driving force in keeping 101 Great Goals alive. We look forward to continuing to serve you with the best football content online, and we trust that you will continue the good fight in making 101 Great Goals the best site it can be.

Enough with the mushy stuff, and onto “The List.”

As is standard practice, it should be pointed out that this list has been put together not on an order of merit, but rather on a chronological basis. Picking the 101 Greatest Goals of the season was hard enough. Picking which goals are the best of the best is simply a bottomless pit of trouble which we opted to stay well clear of.

That said, we welcome your suggestions and comments from which strikes we have wrongly shunned to what goals proved to be the best of the best.

(If there are any “cappers” out there who would like to put all these goals on one video we would be eternally grateful and would give the video great prominence on the site.)

As always, all we ask is that you sit back and enjoy!

  1. MickeySpurs Says:

Fantastic list filled with brilliant goals. Thanks for all your hard work. This is the best football site on the internet bar none!!

  2. anonymous Says:

no. 74 with 36 passes was special. there were a few others which would contest it too, individual skill for no. 36 makes that special, im biased, but still, technique for goal 84 makes that one of the best, prehaps the best of the PL season, 81 rocks too, and there are so much others too, but my vote goes to no. 96. i thought at the time it was probably the best goal of the season, and its definately close, so i think i’ll stick to it. and even if you dont like it, just listen to the commentary! its awesome! haha

  3. jim-bob Says:

101 rocks- when are you guys going to start a podcast?

(Please collate all the goals onto one video- i’m too lazy to watch them all…)

  4. terry tibbs Says:

indeed anonymous, skysports did a poll for PL goal of the season, and torres got 57%, a clear winner.

oh, not really relevant, but they also did a poll for save of the season, and reina is running away with that at 42%, next highest 22% given. though that is still in progress

  5. Joe Says:

    Where are the Messi goals?

  6. Jens Says:

Hi, great list. But no 79 has the wrong team highlighted, Emil Johansson plays in Hammarby.

  7. Pete Says:

Great list guys!! And good work throughout the session. Most of the goals I’ve seen as and when they happened throughout 08/09 but some I forgot about. My fav has to be No.5, probably because its not to often that you see a central defender run past a whole team and score a peach, but also cause it was new to me. Bring on August.

  8. Iwan Evans Says:

great list but surprised not to see Macheda’s goal v Villa in there or Tuncay’s v Aston Villa :(

  9. LDQ Says:

What about Gerrard’s cross goal strike in the Champions League?

  10. pat4B Says:

Look at the amount of zlatan goals on there! hes a genius and soon to be Barca boy.. deary me they will annihilate again next season.

Top work 101 goals! looking forward to next season already!

  11. stop h8ing on vera Says:

You’re missing VDV’s backheel vs Sporting Gijon

  12. stop h8ing on vera Says:

    geovanni vs arsenal too

  13. andrew Says:

I am up shocked that Grafite vs. Munich was only good enough for 81. i had that rated much higher.

  14. Fukctowski Says:

^ as far is i know there is no ranking, its collected chronological.
no3 really is a tremendous goal, baumjohann dribbled the living shit outta them defenders!

  15. sevmard Says:

Lovely stuff. I HUGE fan of the site, I travel a lot and 101greatgoals.com is my lifeline all over the planet for footy highlights and news!

Sarcastic quips about the pundits are much enjoyed as well.

    Cheers

  16. bolton_ed Says:

    love it, amazing goals

my vote has to go to 98 tho, out of this world strike, paul scholes would even be chuffed with that one

  17. Special One Says:

Michael Essien vs. Barcelona takes it for me, quality strike. Is there any way for us to vote, a poll perhaps? Big fan of your website, looking forward to seeing the new features next season.

  18. Calvin Higginbotham Says:

Mr. Coimbra you have once again rekindled my love for the footy. Hooray!

I still think the Jack Lester goal deserves some credit.

    Barmy army,

    This website is epic.

  23. gray Says:

I’ve been doing the African version of your list on my blog and it’s been a hot favourite.

    thanks 101 gg!

  24. pema Says:

Grafite at 81 is a joke, if Lampard would have done it he would be Nr. 1.

Independently you are doing a great job !

  25. Soccer Says:

Great list just as i knew it would be, so nice to see goals i’ve forgotten about.

And pema, this list is in chronological order, meaning that goal number 1 was scored first and goal no 101 was scored last

  26. Nickejjjj Says:

I think that Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goal against Reggina should been included. He sprints past three defenders then chips the ball over the keeper with his “wrong” foot. Sheer class.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWxxrGIXTJE

Otherwise you are doing a fantastic job with this site, keep up the good work!

  27. Sjonni Says:

Nr. 64, Mascara vs Palermo is a ridiculous strike. A dream goal.

  28. Vignir81 Says:

This goal from Reggina’s Emil Hallfredsso from Iceand agains juventus should be there ….

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV64SRvup-Q&feature=related

  29. Halldor Says:

Where are great goals like Gerrard vs. Marseille in france and Aurelio vs. Chelsea in the champions league :)

  30. Claudio Says:

the Gerard’s goal in the Champions should be included… WHAT A CROSS GOAL

  31. Colin Says:

my favorite would have to be christiano zanetti’s volley. classy…

  32. Sporting de Gijón Says:

The best goal is for Diego Castro, the third goal on Valencia 2 - Sporting Gijón 3. Incredible¡¡¡¡

  33. Georgie Says:

The Hallfredsson (Reggina) goal against Buffon and Juventus at Delle Alpi just can´t be overlooked, the sheer power and accuracy is phenomenal! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEdj1HaG8gY

  34. Areign Says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2KSNcEZgq0&feature=channel_page

seriously, how was this not on there?

  35. Rami Says:

Where is the goal of C. Ronaldo against West Ham FC where Berbatov created space out of no where and passed to Ronaldo? I think it deserves to be on the list.

  36. Rami Says:

This is the one I was talking about above

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxJ9wdXXbwY

Clearly deserves to be there. By the way, great list and great work. I know a lot of hard work was put in there.

  37. Darri snær Says:

gretar steinsson is the greatest goal of them all

  38. kevin queensway Says:

Super list keep up the great work. This equalising goal for Millwall in the last minute v swindon (17-2-2009) from Readings 19 year old lonee last season should be included though it is an absolute stunner

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JaRc1zP7F8

  39. elkanofan Says:

    Lovely video

Hmm why no messi goals? Are you going to give him his own category or something lol lool

I mean if you did include messi’s goals it would’ve taken up about 10 spots in the list alone lol.
