Breaking: Tottenham sign defender Juan Foyth

Juan Foyth

Tottenham Hotspur have completed their third signing of the summer by bringing in Argentine defender Juan Foyth from Estudiantes de La Plata.

Third summer signing

Juan Foyth becomes Spurs’ third signing of the summer.

He joins fellow Argentine Paulo Gazzaniga through the door at Hotspur Way, as well as Davinson Sanchez from Ajax.

Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear, with the signings of South Americans Sanchez and Foyth, that he was looking to bolster his central-defender options.

Who is Foyth?

Earlier this summer, Foyth featured for Argentina at Under 20 World Cup.

He featured in all three games, even coming up against Tottenham’s Josh Onomah and Kyle Walker-Peters.

Foyth was promoted to Estudiantes’ first team in January this year.

He made just six appearances for the Argteinian side.

‘Club that believes in young player’

On arrival, Foyth spoke of his excitement to be here.

It was believed that phone calls with Mauricio Pochettino is what convinced him to join.

“I really like this club. I’ve always followed it since I was a boy.

I really like the league. I’m focused and now I’m going to try and make the most of it.

It’s a club that believes in young players and I’m very pleased.”

Serge for the line

Tottenham have left a lot of their deals very late in the window.

Sanchez was the first and even he was only announced on 18 August.

Now, following the signing of Foyth Spurs are looking to also add Serge Auriier.

This transfer had caused a lot of controversy with the Ivorian’s off the field antics.

Aurier now looks close to joining after being given a work permit by the Home Office.

Tottenham’s third summer signing expected in London today

Tottenham are expected to complete their third signing of the summer with Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth due in London later today after being convinced by Mauricio Pochettino, according to El Dia.

Tottenham in action

As we write, Tottenham are in action Burnley at Wembley in the Premier League.

The club’s fortunes at the national stadium have been incredibly disappointing.

Manager Pochettino is, therefore, looking for additions to improve their fortunes as they face a whole season there.

Third summer signing

Tottenham have so far completed just two signings this summer with the window soon set to shut.

Davinson Sanchez from Ajax and Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzanigaiga have been signed.

The duo were presented to the Tottenham home crowd at Wembley this afternoon.

Spurs are now looking to follow the pair up with the signing of Juan Foyth.

Three-at-the-back

Pochettino looks set to add his second central-defender of the summer following up Sanchez with the signing of Juan Foyth.

He appears keen to bolster his options in central defence with ambitions of playing three-at-the-back.

Last season, Dier was deployed on the right-side of three central-defenders.

Pochettino would rather the England international was used in midfield and the signing Sanchez relieved Dier of this duty.

Sanchez and Foyth also offer Pochetino the option of having two defenders to replace either Vertonghen or Alderweireld when playing just two center-backs.

Argentine talent

Like Pochettino, Foyth is an Argentine central-defender.

He showed much promise during his short stint in the first-team at the Argentinian club.

Earlier this summer he was being tracked by PSG but appears to be set to join Tottenham.

Pochettino is understood to have called him at least six times to convince him to join.

Tottenham’s signing of Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth is now hours away

Juan Foyth

Tottenham win the chase for Juan Foyth

Having signed Davinson Sanchez from Ajax last week, Spurs are set to continue to make waves in the summer transfer market.

Tottenham fans have been reading about Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth for pretty much the whole summer.

At one point, Foyth looked like being Tottenham’s first signing of the summer transfer window, all the way back in early July.

Pochettino convinces Foyth to join Tottenham

Then it looked like PSG had beaten Spurs to Foyth, but last week Tottenham’s move was confirmed by reports in both England and Argentina.

Whilst PSG were interested in Foyth, Mauricio Pochettino has played a key role in bringing the youngster to Spurs and the deal is now very close.

On Tuesday, Argentine newspaper El Dia report that Juan Foyth’s move to Spurs is now very close.

Spurs will pay 13 million euros for Juan Foyth

El Dia report that the paperwork for the transfer of Juan Foyth from Estudiantes to Tottenham will be completed today or tomorrow.

Estudiantes received a key document from Spurs on Monday and the 13 million euro transfer is now very close.

Once the paperwork is finished, Foyth will travel to London on Thursday.

Will Juan Foyth be announced before Spurs v Burnley?

Realistically, Spurs may well be able to announce the signing of Juan Foyth before they play Burnley at Wembley on Sunday.

As it stands, Foyth is continuing to train with Estudiantes until the paperwork is complete.

The 19-year-old defender has emerged as a key player for Estudiantes over the past few months and represented Argentina in the Under-20 World Cup.

Foyth’s signing for Spurs continues the north London club’s links with Argentina. Stretching back to the signings of Ricky Villa and Ossie Ardiles in 1978.

Of course, Foyth will join up with fellow countrymen Mauricio Pochettino and Erik Lamela at Tottenham.

Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham, PSG & Juan Foyth

It’s yet to be confirmed as official, but according to reports from Argentina this weekend, Tottenham are set to announce yet another signing.

Tottenham, who face Chelsea at Wembley in the Premier League on Sunday, are now getting going in the transfer market.

Davinson Sanchez became the club’s record signing last week when the Colombian joined Tottenham from Ajax.

And, it seems that Mauricio Pochettinho will continue boosting his backline options by adding Estudiantes central-half Juan Foyth as well.

Me gusta que seas así como sos ❤ 3 años juntos, te amo con el alma.

Fears for Toby Alderweireld

While Tottenham fans will be happy with their fresh defensive options, do they also need to be concerned about Toby Alderweireld?

In December, there were reports that Alderweireld had a contract clause that would allow him to leave Spurs for 25 million pounds.

While, last Friday, the Daily Mail suggested that Man City could swoop in for the Spurs star.

Are Tottenham adding Sanchez, and possibly Foyth, as they know Alderweireld could be on the way out of the club?

Deal with Estudiantes

Either way, Argentine news outlet Todo Noticias have reported that Estudiantes have finalised negotiations with Spurs over the Juan Foyth deal.

It’s reported that Foyth is joining Tottenham in a €10.5 million deal. The 19-year-old will sign a five-year contract with Tottenham.

Todo Noticias further note that PSG were also in the running for Foyth, however the player decided he preferred to move to Spurs.

Foyth made 4 appearances for Estudiantes last season, following a promotion from the club’s second team in January 2017.

The central-defender also featured in all three of Argentina’s group games at the Under-20 World Cup this summer.

Tottenham reach agreement for second summer signing

Spurs boss Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Argentinian side Estudiantes de La Plata for the signing of central-defender Juan Foyth, who will sign a five-year contract with the club.

London buses

Having wrapped up a club-record deal with Ajax for the signing of Davinson Sanchez, Spurs have no sooner moved on to their next target.

Foyth to Tottenham has been an ongoing saga this summer and looks to have reached its conclusion finally.

The defender at one stage looked poised to join Paris Saint-Germain.

However, reports kept surfacing that the 19-year-old wanted to join Tottenham instead.

Head turned

Juan Foyth is understood to have had his head turned by fellow countryman Mauricio Pochettino.

The Spurs boss talked with Foyth about a move and convinced him to pick North London over Paris (he really must be ‘magic’ like they sing!).

Foyth also made the decision based on playing time, believing he’d get more minutes at Tottenham.

Two in one out

After signing Sanchez and possibly Foyth, Tottenham appear to on the verge of offloading Kevin Wimmer.

Wimmer looks set to join West Brom for a fee of around £15m.

This would turn Spurs over a nice £11m profit, after signing him from FC Koln back in 2015 for £4m.

Tottenham lose: Juan Sebastian Veron confirms Juan Foyth’s PSG move

Tottenham are still waiting

Spurs fans are growing impatient.

With less than a couple of weeks until the start of the new Premier League season, Tottenham remain the only club in the EPL yet to sign a player this summer.

Last season’s Premier League runners-up have sold Kyle Walker to Man City for over 50 million pounds, however they’re yet to bring in any fresh faces.

And, on Saturday night in South America, Spurs fans have been informed by former Man United star Juan Sebastian Veron that Argentine defender Juan Foyth will not be joining the club either.

Spurs lose

For a few weeks now, Tottenham have been linked with Estudiantes 19-year-old defender Juan Foyth.

It has been claimed that Spurs’s initial offer of £5.3 million plus £2.3 million in bonuses was rejected by Estudiantes for Foyth.

At the same time, French moneybags PSG have been closing in on the Spurs target, and according to Juan Veron, the teenager is now on his way to Paris.

Veron talks

On Saturday night, Veron, who is the Estudiantes chairman, has confirmed that Foyth is PSG bound. As reported on ESPN, the Argentine legend said:

We already have an agreement between PSG and Estudiantes for Juan. All that is left is for his representatives to strike a deal.

Foyth’s sale will be for more than €10m.

PSG’s capture of the Argentine defender could kickstart a mega week in the French capital.

If the rumours are true, PSG could be about to sign Neymar in a deal worth half a billion pounds.

Tottenham’s opening offer for Juan Foyth rejected by Estudiantes

Will Spurs ever make a signing?!

For a few weeks now, Tottenham have been linked with Estudiantes 19-year-old defender Juan Foyth.

Spurs are right now the only side in the Premier League not have made a summer signing. A fact which is a concern to their fan base, despite the quality side Mauricio Pochettino has built.

The sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City last Friday, for a world record fee for a defender, will likely see Tottenham make some moves.

Spurs have been heavily linked with Ross Barkley in recent days and the rumours surrounding Foyth continue to swirl in Argentina.

Juan Foyth confirms Tottenham negotiations

In an interview with El Dia on the weekend, Juan Foyth has confirmed that his club Estudiantes are in negotiations with Tottenham.

There have been strong rumours that Estudiantes representatives – including former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Juan Veron – had been in London to negotiate with Tottenham.

And, that Foyth would be Tottenham’s first signing of the summer.

Tottenham’s opening offer for Juan Foyth rejected by Estudiantes

In recent hours, Fernando Serrano, a journalist for Argentine radio station Le Redonda reported that Tottenham’s opening offer for Foyth has been rejected.

Tottenham’s initial offer of £5.3 million plus £2.3 million in bonuses was rejected by Estudiantes for Juan Foyth.

This has led to some Spurs fans to react badly on social media.

Will Spurs complete a deal for Juan Foyth?

After all, if Spurs cannot agree a “small” deal such as this one, what hope do they have to conclude moves such as the one for Ross Barkley.

Foyth, who is just 19, publicly admitted he didn’t want to know anything about how negotiations were progressing.

Estudiantes have a key Copa Libertadores match against Nacional Potosi this coming Thursday.

The sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City, for a world record fee for a defender, will likely see Tottenham make some moves.

Juan Foyth confirms Tottenham negotiations

In a new interview with El Dia, Juan Foyth has confirmed that his club Estudiantes are in negotiations with Tottenham.

Foyth was hailed for his Estudiantes performances against Nacional Potosi last week. The Argentine side won 1-0 despite playing in seriously tough conditions, in the Copa Libertadores.

Foyth told El Dia: “I know they are negotiating with Tottenham but I tried to stay focused on the game we were going to play.”

“I do not want to know too much”

On reports he is to travel to Tottenham in the coming hours: “To be honest I do not know… I heard that they are negotiating with Tottenham.”

The 19-year-old added: “But the truth is that I do not know how far they are going to get and if I will finally be transferred… I ask little and I do not want to know too much.”

Foyth looks like a credible signing for Spurs since he is so young and due to Mauricio Pochettino’s links in Argentina.

Were he to sign, Foyth would join up with fellow Argentine Erik Lamela, who is already at Spurs.

But, Estudiantes may be keen on holding onto Foyth for the remainder of the Copa Libertadores, they play the second leg against Nacional Potosi this coming Thursday.

Tottenham to hold talks with exciting, young Argentine defender

Spurs boss Pochettino

19 year-old to make up Juan Foyth of Spurs’ defence?..

Tottenham have identified 19 year-old Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth as a potential star of the future, according to The Evening Standard.

Foyth made 4 appearances for Estudiantes de La Plata last season, following a promotion from the club’s second team in January 2017.

The central-defender featured in all 3 of Argentina’s group games at the Under-20 World Cup this summer. Argentina were placed in the same group as eventual winners England, who featured two current Spurs youngter Josh Onomah and Kyle Walker-Peters.

Following one win and three defeats Argentina were eliminated at the group stages of the competition.

Tottenham set for talks this week

Former Chelsea and Manchester United player Juan Sebastián Verón, now club president of Estudiantes, is set to fly to London, and potentially Italy as well, this week along with Juan Foyth’s agents to further discuss a transfer of the promising, young defender.

Reports coming out of Argentina suggest that a deal could be worth around £8m, with the possibility of Juan Foyth joining Mauricio Pochettino’s side this week.

Nelson Vivas exploded like the Hulk as Estudiantes drew with Boca

Nelson Vivas lost it

Now 47, it’s been a while since most Arsenal fans have thought of Argentine defender Nelson Vivas.

Vivas was a Gunners regular from 1998 to 2001, as he chalked up 69 league appearances of Arsenal scoring once.

Aside from playing at Highbury, Vivas was on the books at Boca Juniors, Celta Vigo, Inter Milan and River Plate during his career.

Nowadays, Vivas is the manager of Argentine side Estudiantes, and on Saturday night they drew 0-0 with Boca.

But Vivas didn’t manage to watch the full match from the sidelines as he was sent off.

Cue the Hulk reaction

Angry with a decision from the officials, Vivas blew up on the touchline in memorable style.

Like Hulk Hogan, Vivas ripped off his shirt to reveal tattooed back and bulging veins popping out his neck.

Juan Sebastian Veron makes good on promise, comes out of retirement aged 41

Veron signs for Estudiantes

Veron returns

Juan Sebastian Veron has signed a new contract with Estudiantes – two years after he retired. The former Manchester United midfielder has penned an 18-month deal with the Argentinian side at the age of 41.

The development comes after Veron decided to make good on a promise to play in 2017 Copa Libertadores if fans bought 65 percent of the tickets for their new stadium. Now, as good as his word, he’s back. His minimal salary will be “donated for the development of the club.” He’s spent the last few months working on his fitness.

He could make his return against Bayer Leverkusen on January 8.

Estudiantes legend

The German club face Estudiantes in the Florida Cup. Veron is already an Estudiantes legend. He won Apertura titles with Estudiantes in 2006 and 2010, and the Copa Libertadores in 2009 during his second spell with the club. He briefly played for Brandsen before a third spell with Estudiantes. This will be his fourth stint with the club.

Veron announces return to football

Currently President of the Argentine ckub, 41-year-old legendary midfielder Juan Sebastián Verón is to come out of retirement to play for boyhood club Estudiantes.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea star retired in 2014 but promised to play in the Copa Libertadores if supporters bought 65 per cent of the boxes at the club’s new stadium.

It will technically be his fifth spell as an Estudiantes player. He was filmed back in training earlier this week ahead of his January return.

“He told us he wants to return, that from January he will return as a player,” midfielder Israel Damonte told La Oral Deportiva.

“He will play from January for the tournament league and Copa Libertadores in 2017.”

Friendly between Gimnasia & Estudiantes descends into savage fight (Video)

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 11.01.17

You have to wonder about the scheduling that is taking place in Argentina right now, before the new season starts next week.

Boca Juniors and River Plate have played each other twice in two weeks, the first game of which saw five players sent off.

See: 5 sent off in River Plate’s 1-0 friendly win over Boca Juniors (Video).

On Sunday, Gimnasia and Estudiantes were the latest Argentine rivals to go at it, in spectacular fashion, during a “friendly”.

Estudiantes won the match 1-0 thanks to an early Carlos Auzqui goal but they had two players sent off. Gimnasia lost one player to a red card.

Two of the three sendings off were due to the post-match brawl, that becomes quite savage – as can be seen on the video below.

Santiago Ascacibar was sent off for Estudiantes and Gimnasia goalkeeper Enrique Bologna saw red in the post-match brawl which really needs to be seen to be believed.

With seven minutes injury time to be played at the end of the game, the teams could only see out four and the game was suspended.

Pablo Barrientos (San Lorenzo) scores incredible 55 yard golazo v Estudiantes [Vine]

30 yard old San Lorenzo midfielder Pablo Barrientos last night scored an early goal of the season contender in the Argentine Primera División.

Just two minutes after coming off the San Lorenzo bench in the 67th minute, Barrientos made it 2-0 to the away side at Estudiantes with a jaw-dropping 55 yard golazo.

Once an Estudiantes player, Barrientos’ inch perfect attempt was just out of reach of the diving, backtracking goalkeeper.

Man United’s Marcos Rojo insane celebration for goal in Argentina whilst wearing a Barcelona shirt [Video]

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo was signed by Louis van Gaal this summer from Sporting CP for a fee of £16m.

The Argentine World Cup star spent 11 years at Estudiantes, joining the club when he was only 9 before leaving for Europe aged 20.

Now at Manchester United, Marcos Rojo was filmed (in a Barcelona shirt) watching Estudiantes’ 3-1 Primera Division win over Gimnasia La Plata this weekend at home in Manchester.

Ezequiel Cerutti put Estudiantes 3-1 up in the 89th minute from the penalty kick to the delight of the versatile defender.

Wearing a Barcelona shirt, Rojo went pretty insane celebrating the goal.

Manchester City submit €10m bid for Estudiantes midfielder Joaquín Correa [SportItalia]

According to recent reports in Argentina, Benfica were very close to sealing a €7m deal for Estudiantes midfielder Joaquín Correa.

The 20 year old has been tracked by a number of top European clubs but it is Manchester City who have submitted a bid, according to SportItalia.

If Manchester City are able to complete the €10m deal, Joaquín Correa will reportedly spend the rest of the season on loan at Sampdoria to acclimatise himself to the European game.

Attacking midfielder by trade, the left footed Correa looks set to make a big career decision in January.

Golazo! Estudiantes wonderkid Joaquin Correa scores exceptional goal against Penarol [Video]

Joaquin Correa is considered to be one of the most exciting talents in Argentine football and this goal shows why.

The Estudiantes wonderkid hit an exceptional golazo in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana clash against Penarol.

He picks up the ball in the opposition half, eludes one or two challenges and smacks a glorious effort past the goalkeeper from distance. Showing a confidence that belies his tender age, Correa is definitely one to watch.

It was the opener in a 2-1 victory for Estudiantes.

Atletico Madrid move for Estudiantes keeper Gerónimo Rulli with Thibaut Courtois set to return to Chelsea [AS]

Most of the talk so far this summer has been about the players likely to leave Atletico Madrid, but Diego Simeone is preparing for next season at the Vicente Calderon in earnest.

Last week, the 2013/2014 La Liga winners secured the signing of forward Angel Correa from San Lorenzo and today, Spanish newspaper AS report that another Argentine youngster is being targeted.

Atletico Madrid are set to offer five million euros for Estudiantes goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli in addition to a long-term, five-year contract at the Vicente Calderon.

Rulli, who established himself at Estudiantes over the course of 2013/2014, has already agreed to the terms of his deal at Atletico, according to AS.

The Spanish media believe Simeone is keen to sign a goalkeeper as he is uncertain as to what will happen to Thibaut Courtois next season.

The Belgian belongs to Chelsea but has been on loan at Atletico Madrid for the past three seasons.

Courtois has said he is happy in Madrid and has two years left on his contract at Chelsea. In recent weeks, the Belgian custodian has said that his future will be decided after the World Cup.

AS add at the end of their article on Atletico Madrid’s move for Gerónimo Rulli that Jose Mourinho now realises just how good Courtois is, presumably from the Champions League semi-finals, and the Spanish side expect him to play in London next season.

Ridiculous! Acosta & Silva (Lanus) booked for fireman hat celebration v Estudiantes

Football is, above all else, a game. Spectators come to stadiums such as the Estadio Ciudad de Lanús to be entertained.

We have long since rallied against the rule that sees players booked for taking off their shirts in celebration of a goal.

After all, the whole point of the Beautiful Game is to score a goal – elaborate celebrations only add to the spectacle and should be encouraged rather than stamped out.

As a result, the video below shows up modern football in a pretty sad light and we are generally interested for an explanation of referee Andres Merlos’ actions.

Lanus and Estudiantes played out a 1-1 draw in Argentina’s Primera Division on Monday night.

Estudiantes took the lead on 2 minutes, with a goal combining comical defending and an acrobatic overhead kick (see 2nd video below) before Lanus equalised eight minutes later.

Lautaro Acosta equalised and celebrated with Santiago Silva by pulling out some fireman hats from the dugout.

Looks to us to have been a fine idea with a genuinely good excuse to highlight one of the most important professions in society.

Then Merlos got involved and became a kill joy. Ridiculous!
