Robin van Persie and Gary Crosby

Monday, November 24th, 2008

One of the missed talking points of the past weekend, perhaps because it was 2-0 to Manchester City at the time, was Robin van Persie’s disallowed goal at Eastlands.

If Gary Crosby’s was allowed why wasn’t van Persie’s?

Thierry Henry did exactly the same thing two yrs ago against Blackburn’s Brad Freidel and it was also ruled out. That day however, we were winning 2-0 or 3-0 if I remember correctly….

well crosby headed the ball out of the goalie’s hands when he was holding it in one, rapin robin took the ball out of the air when hart let it go to kick it, in the rules it is illegal to interfere with the goalie’s kick, and the act of throwing it up in order to kick it is included in this

Because Crosby’s goal was 18 years ago and since then the rule has changed so that a striker can’t interfere when a keeper is in the action of kicking the ball.

The list of offenses that are covered by unsporting conduct that should be a yellow card includes “worrying the goalkeeper or trying to prevent him from putting the ball into play”.

I know that Arsenal fans always blame the ref when things don’t go their way, but at least learn the rules.
