Egypt’s Mohamed Aboutrika refuses Vatican’s peace match as Israel’s Yossi Benayoun is going

Egypt’s Mohamed Aboutrika has publicly turned down an invitation from the Vatican to play in a peace match.

According to the Al Arabiya news agency, Aboutrika is refusing to play in the match as Israeli star Yossi Benayoun is set to feature.

Aboutrika made his announcement on Twitter, publishing his the letter of invitation sent by the Vatican.

The Egyptian international midfielder added the following comments to his letter:

This is a photo for the match invitation which I turned down because of the Zionist state. Pardon us, we are raising new generation.

Aside from Benayoun, the likes of Roberto Baggio, Zinedine Zidane and Lionel Messi are all expected to take part in the friendly, which is set to be held at Rome’s Olympico stadium on December 1st.

The aim of the match is to unite people of different religions.

Ex-QPR man Yossi Benayoun says Joey Barton “will stay stupid all your life” for anti-Israel tweet

A war of words has broken out on Twitter early on Friday morning between former QPR teammates Joey Barton and Yossi Benayoun.

Barton woke up on Friday morning to tweet out his thoughts on the current war between Israel and Hamas.

Barton wrote on the social network:

If this was anybody else but Israel the West would intervene. It cannot continue. Innocent children being slaughtered. This must stop.

Benayoun, the former Israeli national captain, almost immediately hit back at his ex-QPR teammate, writing:

mate things can never changed you have been stupid and you will stay stupid all your life… embarrassing.

It’s worth noting that Yossi Benayoun now plays for Maccabi Haifa, who were this week attacked on the pitch by a group of pro-Palestinians who deplorably ran onto the pitch during the Greens pre-season friendly with Lille.
