About Mesut Ozil
Mesut Ozil was born on 15 October 1988 in Gelsenkirchen, West Germany. Ozil plays as an attacking midfielder, although he is capable of playing on either flank. He currently plays for Arsenal, who he joined in 2013.
Although not a prolific goalscorer, Ozil is renowned for his ability to create chances for others and rack up assists.
Ozil joined Schalke 04’s youth side in 2005 and made his senior debut the following year. After two seasons and 39 appearances with the club, Ozil was sold to Werder Bremen for a fee of €5 million.
In his first season at the club, Ozil helped Bremen win the DFB-Pokal. Ozil enjoyed another two seasons at the club, becoming an integral member of the side.
Ozil was named in Gernmany’s 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup and shone on the world stage. He helped Germany to a third-placed finish, scoring a fine goal and recording three assists at the tournament. Ozil recorded more assists (7) than any other player in Euro 2012 qualification and was also Germany’s top scorer (8) in their qualification for the 2014 World Cup.
Ozil played in all seven of Germany’s 2014 World Cup matches as they won the tournament in Brazil. Ozil was also part of Germany’s U21 side to win the Euro Championships in 2009.
After a breakthrough 2010 World Cup, Real Madrid signed Ozil for a fee of €15 million. At Madrid, Ozil become one of Europe’s top playmakers. Ozil made 159 appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals. With Madrid, Ozil won the 2010-11 Copa del Rey and the 2011-12 La Liga title.
Having just signed Gareth Bale, Real Madrid decided to let Ozil go. Arsenal signed the player on 2 September 2013 for a club record fee of £42.4 million, making Ozil the most expensive German footballer of all time. In his debut season with the Gunners, Ozil won the the 2013-14 FA Cup, the club’s first trophy in nine years. The following season, Ozil again helped Arsenal to win the FA Cup and the Community Shield.
