About Luis Suarez
Luis Suarez was born on 24 January 1987 in Salto, Uruguay. The striker plays for FC Barcelona after he joined the club in 2014.
Suarez’s youth career began as a 14-year-old at Uruguayan club Nacional. When Suarez was sixteen years old he head butted a referee following a red card. This would be the first of many controversial incidents involving the hot-headed Uruguayan. He made his senior debut for the club in 2005 at the age of 18. In his single season with the first team, Suarez scored 12 goals in 34 appearances and won the domestic league title. While at the club he was scouted by Dutch club Groningen.
Suarez played just one season at Groningen, scoring 15 goals before joining Dutch giants Ajax. Suarez enjoyed three and a half prolific seasons with Ajax, scoring 111 goals in 159 appearances. Suarez won both the Eredivisie title and the KNVB Cup while at the club. His performances earned him the Dutch Footballer of the Year award in the 2009-10 season. In 2010, Suarez was banned for seven matches for biting an opponent’s neck.
Later that year Suarez signed for Liverpool for a fee of £22.8 million. In his second season with the Reds, Suarez won the League Cup. The following season Suarez was involved in more controversy, when he bit Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic. In his final season with Liverpool, Suarez scored 31 goals, winning the League’s Golden Boot. Despite all the controversy that surrounded him, Suarez picked up the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season and the FWA Footballer of the Year.
Suarez has had a successful international career. Suarez is the national team’s all-time leading goalscorer, with over 50 goals for his country. He played a crucial part in Uruguay’s 2011 Copa America victory. In a World Cup match against Italy in 2014, Suarez was sent off for biting opponent Giorgio Chiellini. Quite remarkably, this was the third time Suarez had bitten an opponent. Because of his priors, Suarez was banned for four months from all official footballing activities.
Despite being banned, Suarez was sold to Barcelona. He made his debut for the club in October 2014; joining an attack with Messi and Neymar. Suarez won the treble in his first season at Barcelona, scoring 25 goals.
