About Karim Benzema
Karim Benzema was born on 19 December 1987 in Lyon France. He plays as a striker for France and Real Madrid.
Benzema’s youth career began at Lyon in 1996. After progressing through the club’s academy and B side, Benzema made his professional debut on 11 December 2004, bagging an assist in a 2-0 win. Soon after, he signed his first professional contract, a three-year deal with Lyon.
Benzema scored 15 goals in 20 appearances for Lyon’s B side between 2004 and 2006, while featuring sparingly for the first team. His breakthrough season came in the 2007-08 campaign, when the striker scored 31 goals across all competitions, becoming Ligue 1’s top goalscorer and winning the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award. With Lyon, Benzema won four consecutive Ligue 1 titles as well as the 2008 Coupe de France. He scored 66 goals in 148 appearances for the club before moving to Real Madrid in 2009.
Benzema signed for Real Madrid on 9 July 2009 for a fee of €35 million. He made his competitive debut for the club on 29 August 2009 against Deportivo La Coruna and scored his first Real Madrid goal the following month in a 5-0 win over Xerez. Benzema ended his first season with the club with 9 goals in 33 appearances.
The following season Benzema scored an impressive 26 goals as Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey. Benzema has since gone on to win La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup with Madrid and has scored over 140 goals for the club.
Having won the European Under-17 Football Championship with France in 2004, Benzema made his senior international debut on 28 March 2007 in a friendly match against Austria. In 2015, Benzema won his 80th cap for his country. He has appeared at Euro 2008, Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup.
