About Javi Martinez
Javi Martinez was born on 2 September 1988 in Estella, Spain. He plays as both a defensive midfielder and a centre-back for the Spanish national team and Bayern Munich.
Martinez joined Osasuna’s youth side in 2001, progressing to the club’s B side in 2005. In 2006, at the age of 17, Martinez was signed by Athletic Bilbao for a fee of €6 million.
Martinez became a regular in the side in his debut season, scoring 3 goals in 35 appearances. In 2010, Martinez was named La Liga’s Breakthrough Player of the Year. He helped Bilbao reach the 2009 and 2012 Copa del Rey finals and the 2012 Europa League final. Martinez scored 25 goals in 240 appearances for the club.
Martinez signed for Bayern Munich on 29 August 2012 after the club activated his €40 million buyout clause, making him the most expensive player in Bundesliga history. He won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and the Champions League in his debut season with the club.
Martinez was part of the Spanish sides to win the European U19 Championship in 2007 and the European U21 Championship in 2011. He made his debut for the senior side on 29 May 2010 in a friendly win over Saudi Arabia. Martinez was also included in the Spanish squads to win the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.
