Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique exchanged words after red card

Ramos fights with Pique

Red Carded Ramos

Sergio Ramos and the Red Card could be a children’s book series if it wasn’t so ghastly at times.

The Real Madrid defender picked up the 22nd red card of his career and his fifth in a Clasico against Barcelona at the Bernabeu on Sunday night. The referee gave him his marching orders for a reckless tackle on Lionel Messi.

Although he didn’t catch the Barcelona attacker, he could have seriously hurt him.

Both feet were off the ground and he left the referee with no choice.

Madrid were losing 2-1 at the time and it made their task even harder. Against the odds, they equalised late on through James Rodriguez. Unfortunately for the hosts, that wasn’t enough to stop Messi magic in stoppage time.

Exchange with Gerard Pique

On his way off the pitch, Ramos exchanged angry words with Gerard Pique.

Although the pair have a formidable partnership at international level, their relationship is rocky away from La Roja with regular quarrels being played out on Twitter.

Here, it appears as though Ramos was unhappy with Pique’s bid to get him sent off.

Have a look at their spat in the pictures and tweets below.

Barcelona’s Gerard Pique tweets…just as Cristiano Ronaldo scores offside goal for Real Madrid

Ronaldo wins it for Madrid?

Real Madrid hosted Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu tonight, and came into the game holding a 2-1 advantage from the first leg.

Madrid pulled off a brilliant result by winning 2-1 in Munich last week thanks to a Ronaldo brace, which gave them a massive advantage coming into tonight’s second leg.

Bayern appeared to be in control last week, but then completely collapsed when Arturo Vidal missed a penalty, and then when Javi Martinez got sent off, the Bavarians lost all composure.

But credit to them, they regrouped in the meantime, and managed to take Madrid to extra-time, having equalled Los Blancos’ 2-1 result from the first leg after 90 minutes.

But despite having the momentum, they were at the distinct disadvantage of having to play extra-time with 10 men, and eventually crumbled to Madrid’s might.

Pique’s Tweet

The crucial moment came on the stroke of the first half of extra-time, when Cristiano Ronaldo fired Madrid back ahead in the tie.

While it was a brilliantly volleyed finish, replays showed that the Portuguese was clearly a yard offside.

And it doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to deduce that Barcelona man Gerard Pique was sending a not-so cryptic message here…

Gerard Pique gets epically trolled

Left hanging

One little kid became the hero of the hour for all Madridistas – and probably a few Barcelona fans too, after being offered a handshake by defender Gerard Pique – and deciding to leave him hanging.

It was all in good spirits of course, but that hasn’t stopped the video from going viral.

After their hammering at Juventus in the Champions League, Barcelona return to action against Real Sociedad on Saturday.

Rather than following in the footsteps of his Colombian pop star mum Shakira, it looks like two-year-old Sascha is more likely to take after his dad Gerard Pique.

Rather than playing football like his Barcelona star dad, Sascha seems interested in other sports right now.

Proof that Sergio Ramos & Gerard Pique get on very well (video)

Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique go at it again

So vociferous were the comments made between Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique last night, that it is easy to forget that Spain were hugely impressive in their 2-0 win against France.

After the international friendly, Pique took aim at Real Madrid and Ramos responded to the media waiting outside the Stade de France.

See: Gerard Pique & Sergio Ramos go to war again after Spain win over France.

Yet, it is pretty clear that Pique and Ramos do get on rather well.

“This is a show”

Ever since Carles Puyol retired, they have been playing in central defence for Spain. Before that Ramos would invariably play right back and they have been part of a side that has won the World Cup and two European Championships.

After the France win, Pique said: “Almost all of them are friends and I can play cards with them but we know how this works. For me, this is a show, I don’t get upset at what they [Marcelo and Ramos] said, and I hope they don’t get upset when I do the same. I like the type of wordplay they used.”

Meanwhile, Ramos added: “Years ago we got our relationship back on track and it is magnificent – the group comes first.”

So reading between the lines, it is clear Ramos and Pique are friends, and that they are even teased in the Spain dressing room about their supposed “animosity”.

This was also clearly illustrated after the game in France, as video emerged from the tunnel before the friendly showing Pique, Ramos and David De Gea having a good laugh together…

Gerard Pique & Sergio Ramos go to war again after Spain win over France

Spain celebrate win over France

Gerard Pique v Sergio Ramos. Again.

A war of words between Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos is nothing new these days.

The surprise about the latest bout of attacks as Real Madrid v Barcelona plays out in the media, is that the comments below came after Spain won in France 2-0.

Both Ramos and Pique played the full 90 minutes in Spain’s impressive 2-0 win over France in Paris on Tuesday evening.

“Who said it was a friendly?”

Immediately after the friendly international, Sergio Ramos posted a picture on Instagram of the whole Spain squad celebrating the victory over France.

Ramos added the caption: “Who said it was a friendly?”

And that should have been the end of it, with both players returning to their clubs to concentrate on the La Liga title race and Champions League matches coming up.

The cause of the latest Ramos v Pique argument centred around VAR which was responsible for Spain’s win in France.

The video assistant referee meant Antoine Griezmann saw a goal disallowed in the second half of the friendly and the 2-0 Spain win was confirmed by Gerard Deulofeu.

The on-loan AC Milan attacker originally thought his goal had been disallowed, but was overturned by VAR.

Gerard Pique lays into Real Madrid

After the game, Gerard Pique joked that the decisions in Spain’s favour were “down to me wearing white. It worked really well and I think it’d be a good idea to have VAR in LaLiga. We’ve been asking for it for some time.”

Pique also laid into Real Madrid: “I don’t like the values Real Madrid transmit, although there are players there I really appreciate with and am friends with. I don’t doubt Raul’s madridismo and I’d never work at Real Madrid. What I don’t like about Real Madrid is how those in the box seats pull the strings.I don’t like what they transmit, as a club, what do you want me to tell you. Almost all of them are friends and I can play cards with them but we know how this works.”

Finally, Pique also hit back at insinuations from Ramos and Marcelo that Barcelona’s recent Champions League comeback win over PSG was down to officiating.

Pique: “For me, this is a show, I don’t get upset at what they [Marcelo and Ramos] said, and I hope they don’t get upset when I do the same. I like the type of wordplay they used.”

Sergio Ramos responds

Once he heard about Pique’s comments, Sergio Ramos rose to the defence of his club.

Ramos: “What Pique says won’t change the values, our badge, our history or our titles. What he says will provoke headlines and sell newspapers but we live off of that. In every box seat strings are pulled, but if anything, they [Barcelona] should in general have more to be quiet about then we do.”

Regarding the Pique joke about wearing white, Ramos said: “The dressing room laughed at that, the white shirt looks better on him and he doesn’t know how to react to that.”Years ago we got our relationship back on track and it is magnificent – the group comes first.”

The Ramos v Pique public feud is one that looks set to run and run…

Did Kylian Mbappe drop a hint with his half-time shirt swap?

Shirt swap

Half-time shirt swaps are usually not appreciated by fans.

Probably why Monaco wonderkid Kylian Mbappe waited until he was off the pitch before swapping his in Tuesday night’s friendly against Spain.

The 18-year-old traded shirts with Barcelona defender Gerard Pique at the break.

Perhaps it’s nothing more than a youngster swapping shirts with an idol.

Next club?

Mbappe has been linked with both Real Madrid and Barcelona recently, with his Monaco teammate Fabinho suggesting he’ll end up at one of the two.

Earlier in the match Mbappe was well cut out by another Barcelona player, Sergio Busquets. Do the Catalans have the edge over Real Madrid in the race for Mbappe?

Manchester United are also heavily linked with the forward.

Gerard Pique fumed about Barcelona fans after the Valencia game (Video)

Gerard Pique v Barcelona fans

Barcelona picked up three points in La Liga on Sunday night when they beat Valencia 4-2 at the Camp Nou.

The final goal of the game was scored by Andre Gomes, who has struggled to impress since his arrival from Valencia.

After Gomes found the target for the first time in his Barca career, the midfielder refrained from celebrating in order not to offend Los Che.

Gomes also received some abuse from home supporters in the game as they jeered him from the stands.

That provoked Gerard Pique in the mixed zone after the game.

Word of advice

Pique waded into the Gomes-fans issue to rebuke his own supporters:

The people who whistle before we start to play should stay at home.

That does not help anyone. It is intolerable that this happens. One thing is that the game goes wrong and you protest, but another is that it is done before you start your performance.

That is how you lose trust. It can not be.

Rumour: Why Gerard Pique & Shakira aren’t invited to Leo Messi’s wedding

Leo Messi & Antonella Rocuzzo

The Messis vs the Piques

Spanish newspaper El Pais have run a report claiming there’s a personal relationship problem between FC Barcelona stars Leo Messi and Gerard Pique.

Rather than coming from the two team mates, the problems stem from issues between Antonella Roccuzzo and Shakira.

Rumours that Antonella Roccuzzo and Shakira aren’t friends have been swirling around for a long while.

The source of the breakdown is said to have occurred in 2010. Back then, Pique ended a relationship with his previous girlfriend Nuria Tomas, who is part of Antonella’s close circle.

As a result, gossip columns say Shakira has never become friends with Messi’s partner.

The new revelation disclosed by El Pais is that Pique and Shakira haven’t been invited to the couple’s wedding.

The wedding of Leo Messi & Antonella Rocuzzo is expected to be one of the biggest events of 2017 and the Spanish speaking press are already excited about it.

June 24, 2017, is reportedly the date for the wedding.

Gerard Pique believes Barcelona’s epic comeback will inspire baby boom

FC Barcelona v Paris Saint-Germain - UEFA Champions League Round of 16: Second Leg

Barca baby boom

Barcelona’s incredible 6-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain made history as the Catalan giants sealed a comeback that few thought possible. No team had ever overturned a 4-0 first leg European Cup defeat until Luis Enrique’s side.

Gerard Pique, like all of his teammates and football fans around the world, was elated after the win. Speaking to the press, he suggested that such an epic comeback could inspire a baby boom.

He was quoted by the Sun recalling Andres Iniesta’s stoppage-time equaliser against Chelsea in 2009: “I remember [Andres] Iniesta’s goal at Stamford Bridge, but what happened here has no comparison.

“One thing is to score a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time, another is to score three in seven minutes.

“You could call it a miracle, a piece of history.

“We will celebrate tonight, despite having training tomorrow. I hope the hospitals hire many midwives for the next nine months because there will be a lot of love-making tonight.”

Message to the haters

Pique continued by sending a message to every critic who wrote off the Spanish champions.

“Many people wanted to bury us, but again we showed what we have and that we want to win.

“I understand there are people who wanted us to lose, ex-managers like [Arrigo] Sacchi and [Raymond] Domenech and I could list even more. We will fall one day but, today we carry on fighting.”

Neymar was one of the five different goal scorers for Barcelona in their 6-1 rout of Sporting Gijon on Wednesday night.

Barcelona’s win combined with Real Madrid’s home draw against Las Palmas had really opened up the La Liga title race.

Meanwhile, Luis Enrique has announced that he will not be continuing as Barcelona coach next season, but surprisingly not one Barca player has mentioned this on social media.

See: Why has not one Barcelona player publicly mentioned Luis Enrique yet?

Gerard Pique’s incredible Tweet after Villarreal 2 – Real Madrid 3

Gerard Pique with another explosive Tweet

For a number of years now, Gerard Pique has been the social media spokesman for Barcelona.

Such an established player at the Nou Camp, with the publicly held ambition to be a president of Barcelona one day, Pique has been a huge voice on Twitter against Real Madrid.

Last season that involved laughing at Real Madrid (with emojis) after their administrative gaffe in the Copa del Rey saw them kicked out the Copa del Rey.

Pique Tweets after Villarreal 2 – Real Madrid 3

This season, Pique has become a lot more vocal when it comes to officiating in La Liga, which he believes is in the favour of Real Madrid.

In early January, Pique publicly called out the head of La Liga after Barcelona had been held to a 1-1 draw at Villarreal.

On Sunday night, it was yet again a match involving Villarreal that saw Pique lose his cool on Twitter in what comes across as a seriously angry Tweet.

“Against the same teams. 8 points.”

Pique Tweeted as soon as Real Madrid won 3-2 at Villarreal, the following message:

“Against the same teams. 8 points. 8 and such. These cuttings are via the Madrid press if anyone is in doubt”.

The first cutting is from AS and features Gerard Pique’s disallowed goal for Barcelona against Malaga in the 0-0 draw this season.

“Via the Madrid press”

The second article is from AS and features a Sergio Ramos goal, also against Malaga this season. Los Blancos won the game 2-1.

The third article is from Marca and features the penalty that was not awarded to Barcelona at Villarreal this season, in a match they drew 1-1.

Finally, the fourth article is from last night, regarding Real Madrid’s questionable penalty at Villarreal. Zinedine Zidane’s side won 3-2.

The 8-point swing

So, according to Pique, whilst Real Madrid bagged four extra points from refereeing decisions.

Barcelona lost four points from the La Liga officials in 2016/2017.

And, these are just games against Malaga and Villarreal.

The difference between Real Madrid and Barcelona is currently one point and Los Blancos have a game in hand.

Sergio Ramos responds

Had the eight points gone the other way, as Pique things they should have, Barcelona would be out of sight!

As is the way in Spanish football, Sergio Ramos has already responded to Gerard Pique’s Tweet.

Ramos: “I would be surprised if it would be [Lionel] Messi [to write the tweet]. We already know about Pique’s world, where everything’s a plot against him. The referees have a difficult job, we have to try and make them more comfortable.”

The Real Madrid defender continued: “Referees sometimes give you and others take away, but you have to be prepared for everything. We are not going to get into these issues because it will not change anything, the three points will be added and we will continue to be first.”

Child at heart

Neymar Jr has been enjoying training in Barcelona this week, showing his mischievous side with Gerard Pique and Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan and Brazillian even took the opportunity to catch Pique off guard, one kneeling behind while the other pushed the Spaniard over.

The three has a very good relationship both on and off the pitch and no doubt are in good spirits following their 5-0 victory over Las Palmas.

How Shakira could get Gerard Pique to move from Barcelona to Arsenal (Video)

Gerard Pique to Arsenal

One of the stories focusing attention on Monday, centres on the possibility that Gerard Pique could leave FC Barcelona to head to Arsenal.

The story was initially spun by Spanish website Don Balon, and it’s since been repeated and circulated by the Guardian.

The thrust of the story centres on Colombian popstar Shakira.

The partner of Pique feels the time may be right for the couple to leave Barcelona, according to the rumours.

So is Shakira the key?

Arsenal Fan TV have looked into the story to wonder if Pique, the former Man United defender, could soon be joining the Gunners.

Enjoy the video below.

Chelsea & Arsenal linked with a shock move for Gerard Pique

Gerard Pique & Shakira

Chelsea, Arsenal & Gerard Pique

Here’s Monday BS transfer story of the day.

The Guardian aren’t usually a paper who spread complete nonsense transfer stories, however the broadsheet do allow themselves a little bit of wiggle room in their daily rumour mill article on their site.

Today, they’ve allowed themselves to be open to clickbait claims with a piece headlined: Football transfer rumours: Gerard Piqué to Chelsea or Arsenal?

What’s the story?

The Guardian unfortunately fail to mention the source of the rumour.

Instead, they inform their readers of the following:

Word in Spain suggests that the prospect of Gerard Pique moving to England isn’t the most outlandish in the world.

The story is given an extra layer of juice by the suggestions that Pique’s future is in doubt because Shakira isn’t happy with life in Barcelona.

Shakira, who as you’ll know happens to be married to Gerard, wants him to move away from Barcelona because of all the stick he gets in Catalonia. Apparently she thinks that it’ll all be much nicer in England, which does lead us to think she hasn’t been to England much.

Getting to the source

Digging into the roots of the story, the source is the wholly unreliable Spanish website Don Balon.

They first ran with the Pique to leave Barca story on Sunday, and importantly they offered no evidence for their claims, save for spreading the speculation.

It’s also worth stressing that Don Balon never mentioned Chelsea or Arsenal in their original article.

Gerard Pique much more relaxed during Barcelona win over Bilbao (video)

Gerard Pique much more relaxed v Bilbao

All eyes were on Gerard Pique during Barcelona’s match against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday night.

Pique had very publicly lost his cool after Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Villarreal on Sunday.

Even after Leo Messi’s free-kick equaliser, Pique still felt that Barcelona were robbed by the referee and that there is a conspiracy against the Catalan side this season.

See: Gerard Pique calls out the La Liga president after Villarreal 1 – Barcelona 1.

Pique turns the other cheek

Spanish TV had a special camera on Gerard Pique during the 3-1 Copa del Rey win over Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday night.

Despite it being a close game, in terms of the tie, with Barcelona only winning late on thanks to Messi’s latest free-kick, Pique did not kick up a fuss at all.

When there were some disputed decisions, the likes of Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta, the MSN, Jordi Alba all complained… but not Gerard Pique.

It feels like Pique has been listening to manager Luis Enrique, saying: “We are always going to support Piqué, but sometimes he has to be careful.”

Spanish Referees will make Gerard Pique pay for his comments, Barça man doesn’t care

Pique calls out ref

Gerard Pique just can’t bite his tongue.

The Barcelona defender is famed for his straight-talking, and its gotten him into plenty of trouble.

His trolling of Real Madrid at Barcelona’s 2015 Treble celebrations made him a pariah among Madrid-supporting Spain fans, and he was booed and criticized for over a year.

There have been countless other incidents, and Pique was at it again last night, literally calling out La Liga president Javier Tebas as he walked off the pitch, incensed that Barcelona had been denied a penalty against Villarreal.

Even if Pique’s frustration was understandable, the way in which he expressed it was dubious, and it could now cost him.

Defender will be , he doesn’t care

According to the Spanish media (Marca), the Spanish Referees Committee is going to denounce Pique, and see that he pays for his comments.

Asked to retract or tailor his comments today, Pique simply reiterated his stance:

“I still believe in what I say and every week makes me more in the right. You could clearly see it, I think it’s very clear what happened on the pitch.

“You have to be careful because they analyse everything. But let them analyse it [my comments] and waste time on that. That’s their right.”

Gerard Pique shouts in the stands after Villarreal draw

Extraordinary scenes

Barcelona’s late draw at Villarreal featured an incredible top bins free-kick from Leo Messi.

It also saw some extraordinary scenes at full time as Barcelona defender Gerard Pique went to the stands to attack La Liga president Javier Tebas.

The 1-1 draw against the Yellow Submarine was another disappointing result for Barcelona at the start of 2017 after they had lost 2-1 at Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey.

Bruno handball

At 1-0 down, with 20 minutes to go Villarreal committed a clear handball in the box. Bruno dived down to block a Leo Messi shot with his hand.

It was a 100% penalty appeal and according to Barcelona would have allowed them a quicker way back into the match that they needed to win.

The 1-1 draw at Villarreal leaves Barcelona five points behind Real Madrid at the top of La Liga. Los Blancos have a game in hand.

“Did you see that? Yes you!”

Increasingly, there is a line of thought from Barcelona fans – and perhaps some players as well – that La Liga are helping Real Madrid to win the title, having gone so long without it.

After the game, Pique headed to the side of the pitch and pointed at the directors box, towards La Liga president Javier Tebas.

Pique said: “Did you see that? Yes you!” referring to the penalty decision that was not given.

After the game, Pique referenced two penalty decisions he felt should have gone Barcelona’s way.

Javier Tebas is a Real Madrid fan

In November, Javier Tebas, the head of La Liga, admitted he was a Real Madrid fan to AS.

Tebas: “If I say I don’t support [Madrid], then that would be hypocritical and I would be painted as a liar… And I certainly don’t like to be called a liar. Imagine if I said that I loved all teams, and then it came out that I supported Madrid since I was a boy, went to 27 Clasicos in the past, that I celebrated Madrid wins with friends in a bar. I prefer to call it as it is.”

Pique’s pedigree

After his starring role in Barcelona’s latest sponsorship deal, struck with Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten, there was plenty of talk this week about how Gerard Pique would make a great club president after he retired. Heck, it’s in his blood. The defender’s grandfather, Amador Bernabeu, is a former Barcelona vice-president.

The deal was actually set in motion when Pique hosted a dinner party at the house of Rakuten CEO, Hiroshi Mikitani, in San Francisco last June. It showed his eye for a deal and his political pedigree.

Guardiola’s vote

Given the fact that he’s a club legend, such an appointment would be a dream for Barca fans. It would almost be as good as seeing Pep Guardiola become manager. Speaking of the Man City boss, he was asked what he thought of the idea of Pique as president at his press conference yesterday. His response? “I’d vote for him.”

La Liga holders Barcelona today announced a new four year deal worth €220m with Japanese e-commerce giants ‘Rakuten’.

Qatar Airways, who have sponsored the club for six years, will be replaced by Rakuten from the start of next season.

Barcelona will earn €55m annually plus incentives of €1.5 million for each La Liga title and €5 million for each Champions League title.

Pique crucial in process

29-year-old Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has already stated that he would like to become president of the club one day.

The deal was actually set in motion when Gerard Pique hosted a dinner party at the house of Rakuten CEO, Hiroshi Mikitani, in San Francisco last June.

“Rakuten is a young and modern digital technology company that has a desire to grow,” Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“The deal began at a dinner hosted by Gerard Piqué at Hiroshi Mikitani’s house in San Francisco in 2015.”

At first it looked like Jose Mourinho and Gerard Pique were having a rather awkward time together at the London Masters tennis on Sunday.

With the Manchester United manager seated at the end of the row, there was one other gentleman between Mourinho and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique.

When you think of these two football figures, you immediately recall El Clasico matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona, or the Inter Milan Champions League ties with the Catalan giants.

However, it looks like the pair did embrace and spoke during the London Masters tennis.

Manchester United were clearly keen to push the angle that the two did get along, as they reposted a montage of images on Instagram – see below.

The official Manchester United account almost never repost, and if they do, it is usually from a player at the club.

Meanwhile, fans of Manchester United started to joke about #Piqback changing the hashtag that greeted Paul Pogba this summer, when he returned from Juventus, which was #Pogback.

Gerard Pique has spoken highly of his time at Manchester United and has also revealed he would not join Pep Guardiola at Manchester City due to his love and admiration for the Red Devils.

Awkward: Man United boss Jose Mourinho stuck next to Barcelona player at ATP Finals

Jose Mourinho, tennis lover

Jose Mourinho is an avid tennis fan, and loves nothing more than an afternoon of strawberries and cream at Wimbledon.

Indeed, the proximity to Wimledon was one of the many reasons why Mourinho loved living in London so much.

You don’t get a lot of tennis up in Manchester, but with his family still living in London, Mourinho is still a frequent visitor to the capital, and took advantage of the international break to pay a visit.

And after seeing his family, he was straight off to the tennis, with London hosting the ATP Finals this weekend.

Stuck next to Gerard Pique at ATP Finals

The Manchester United boss had one of the best seats in the house for the match between Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem.

But there was just one problem: sitting just one seat away was Barcelona man Gerard Pique.

Why awkward? Because the pair used to be on opposite sides of Spain’s great football divide, between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

As Madrid boss, Mourinho did his level best to provoke footballing civil war, and his antics didn’t go down at all well in the Catalan capital, where he was considered persona non grata.

Indeed, Pique himself was a vocal critic of Mourinho back then, but while the animosity has surely cooled since then, they didn’t exactly look delighted to see each other either…

Messi puts on another show in Seville

Barcelona won in Sevilla tonight, thanks largely to the performance of one Lionel Messi.

The Argentine scored Barcelona’s first, and set up the second for Luis Suarez as Barcelona ran out 2-1 winners over their potential title rivals.

It was yet another scintillating performance from the diminutive Argentine, who has shaken off his injury problems to return to magisterial form.

Pique lauds his teammate – with dig at Ronaldo?

And, sitting at home watching on TV, Gerard Pique was very impressed.

The defender is currently injured, and Barcelona are badly missing his leadership in defence, but at least while he’s injured we can enjoy his Twitter banter.

Blown away by the performance of his teammate – with whom he’s particularly close and grew up at La Masia – Pique couldn’t resist a Twitter tribute.

Pique wrote:

‘If the Ballon D’Or was given to the best player in the world, Messi would have won it every time since 2009.’

Was this an implicit dig at Cristiano Ronaldo, who’s won it twice in that time?

Barcelona injury updates

In general it’s been an excellent few days for FC Barcelona.

The Catalans have won their last two matches with an aggregate score of 8-0, as they beat Deportivo La Coruna and Man City 4-0 in La Liga and the Champions League respectively.

However, it’s not all been good news for Barca as they’ve been without injured left-back Jordi Alba, while, against Man City, centre-half Gerard Pique was forced off the pitch with a knock.

On Thursday, Barcelona have provided an update on their two injured players.

Gerard Pique & Jordi Alba

It’s been confirmed that Gerard Pique has suffered a sprain in his right ankle which will keep him on the sidelines for three weeks.

As for Alba, who has a hamstring issue, he’ll be missing for the next fortnight.

What games are affected?

Pique will miss matches against Valencia (October 22), Supercopa de Catalunya (October 25), Granada (October 29), Man City (November 1) and Sevilla (November 6).

As for Alba, he’s targeting the Sevilla game for his comeback.

FC Barcelona centre-half Gerard Pique faced the media on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Man City.

During the recent international break, Pique attracted plenty of hate after he cut his shirt sleeves on his Spain jersey, and the criticism provoked the defender to announce his international retirement.

The Spanish media pressed Pique on his decisoin to quit Spain on Tuesday, and the Catalan hit back.

Pique made the following comments about his retirement plans:

I have read that Twitter, MARCA or AS made me leave the Spanish national team, or that Florentino [Perez]’s puppet publication OK Diario forced me out, but that is not the case.

It is a decision that I have taken for when I will be 31-years-old and I think it is the best option.

After the 2014 World Cup I spoke with [Vicente] Del Bosque and Maria Jose Claramunt and told them I did not want to continue, maybe because I had won everything so young, but they convinced me to continue.

Barcelona 4 – Deportivo La Coruna 0

Barcelona romped to a 4-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday as their La Liga season got back on track after their defeat at Celta Vigo before the international break.

The Catalans were thankful to goal scorers Rafinha (2), Luis Suarez and Leo Messi – the Argentine star scored three minutes after coming off the substitutes bench as he returns from injury.

The win was wrapped up by the 58th minute and Brazilian superstar Neymar set up two of the goals in the 4-0 win.

What happened between Neymar & Pique?

In the 85th minute of the match, the cameras panned over to what appeared to be argument between Neymar and Gerard Pique.

Neymar appears to be remonstrating with the Spanish defender about something and Pique simply spreads his arms around the Brazilian.

It looked like a pretty childish argument and so far nobody quite knows why it even started.

So harsh: Gerard Pique tells of insane prank played on Patrice Evra at Man United

Poor Patrice Evra

Juventus defender Patrice Evra is a wonderfully happy man but surely this prank must’ve driven him close to insanity.

During his time at Manchester United, the veteran French full-back was subject to a ridiculously harsh prank involving some specially designed Nike trainers.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique told the story in an interview with TV3 in which he also spoke about how he bagged Shakira and Louis van Gaal’s hands-on approach to youngsters at Barcelona.

Pique tells shocking story

Asked what he missed about Manchester United, Gerard Pique said; “I’m a big fan of British humour. It was what I loved about Manchester. They don’t get offended when you play tricks on them. They try to get you back, but they don’t complain.”

“Here at Barca, my humour hasn’t always been appreciated by everyone. I deflate teammates tires and other things, but this is nothing compared to what happened at United.

“One day Patrice Evra came in with shoes that he’d been asking Nike for months to make. They had the name of his children on them and all these crazy details.

“He went into the shower and we created a small bonfire and burned them. We recorded it and then sent him the video.

“In the first few years here (at Barca) I tried similar things but it didn’t work. It’s not the same culture.

“At United they would take an expensive shirt that you have bought and put it on the free-kick mannequins. The shirt would be ruined because of all the mud it would get on it every time the ball hit it.

“It was a dressing room full of life.”

“Work Harder”

Gerard Pique has a great anecdote about Louis van Gaal. The Barcelona defender, who has recently steeped in controversy, was 12 years old at the time.

“Van Gaal was at my grandfather’s (who was a former Vice-President at Barcelona) house. I was playing as a defender in Barcelona’s youth system. I was 12-years-old and thinking that maybe one day I would climb to the first team and he would still be the coach,” Pique told a Catalan public broadcaster.

“I came in and he pushed me on the ground. He said I was not strong enough to be a defender at Barcelona. And that was it. The dreams of a 12-year-old were pushed to the ground.

“But the message was clear; work more.”

Waka Waka

Pique goes on to discuss a number of issues, including how he met his wife Shakira prior to the World Cup in 2010.

“First time I met Shakira was in Madrid when we filmed the video for Waka Waka before the 2010 World Cup and I asked for her number,” Pique said.

“The only chance I would have of seeing her [again] would be at the final because she was performing the closing ceremony.

“I told her that if I had to reach the final to see her I would do so. And that was the second time we met, after the World Cup Final.”

Pique also talks about Lionel Messi’s influence at Barcelona, playing with Ronaldo at Manchester United, the rivalry with Real Madrid and what he misses about Manchester.

The 29-year-old recently announced he would retire from the Spanish national team after the 2018 World Cup following his latest sleeve-cutting controversy.

Spain’s TV3 ran a feature on Thursday night with FC Barcelona star Gerard Pique.

Pique’s dominated the news in Spain during the international break, as he’s laid out his retirement plans from La Roja after courting plenty of hate when he cut the sleeves of his Spain shirt.

However, when he spoke to TV3, one of the highlights was not Pique’s football updates, but rather how he managed to get together with Shakira.

Awesome concert! Thanks @coldplay and Chris for the Amazing hospitality!

His original lame chat-up line

Pique told the following story of how he began dating the Colombian superstar:

First time I met Shakira was in Madrid when we filmed the video for Waka Waka before the 2010 World Cup and I asked for her number.

She arrived in South Africa before us (the Spanish national team) because she was singing at the opening ceremony. I sent her a text asking how the weather was because we were arriving in a few days.

This is a typical stupid question that you write and normally get a response like, ‘it’s cold, bring a coat’.

But the she writes a long paragraph, detailing the change in temperature throughout the day.

I thought, ‘Jesus, this is not normal’. It was in those details that I could tell there was affection.

We started messaging each other throughout the tournament, but the only chance I would have of seeing her would be at the final because she was performing the closing ceremony.

I told her that if I had to reach the final to see her I would do so. And that was the second time we met, after the World Cup Final.
