About Gerard Pique

Gerard Pique was born on 2 February 1987 in Barcelona, Spain. Pique plays as a centre-back for Barcelona, the club he joined as a youth player in 1997.

At 6ft4, Pique is good in the air. Although he is a traditional centre-back, Pique is versatile enough to play as a defensive midfielder and occasionally enjoys a marauding run into the opposition’s penalty area.

Pique left Barcelona’s La Masia academy in 2004 to sign for Manchester United. In October 2004, he made his debut for the club in a League cup victory over Crewe Alexandra. The following season Pique made his League debut, although he only featured 3 times in the campaign. In the 2006-07 season Pique was loaned back to Spain to play for Real Zaragoza. In the 2007-08 season Pique returned to Manchester, but was once again used as a backup player. Pique made 13 appearances for the Red Devils in his final season as the club won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

In May 2008, Pique re-signed for his boyhood club, Barcelona, for a fee of £5 million. In his first season at the club, Pique made 22 League appearances as Barcelona won the European treble. Now Barcelona’s established first-choice centre-back, Pique has played over 300 matches for the club and has won 19 major honours for the Catalans.

Pique represented Spain at U16, U17, U19, U20 and U21 levels before making his senior debut in 2009. Pique was part of the side to win the 2006 U19 European Championship. Pique has made over 60 appearances for his national team, helping the side win the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship, in which he was named in the Team of the Tournament.

Pique has been named in the FIFA FIFPro World XI and the UEFA Team of the Year on three occasions and was also selected in the 2014-15 La Liga Team of the Season.
